In Acts 16:1–5, Luke presents a brief bio on Paul's "true son in the faith," Timothy. He was from Lystra, a praiseworthy disciple respected by his peers, the son of a Jewish mother who believed in Christ and a Greek father who apparently did not. His mother, Eunice, appears again in 2 Tim. 1:5, where Paul commends Timothy's spiritual legacy.

"You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name," David prayed in Ps. 61:5. God gave a similar heritage to Timothy. Like an efficient relay team, the baton of "sincere faith" (2 Tim. 1:5) was cleanly handed to Eunice from her mother, Lois. Eunice then passed on her love for God and His Word to her son Timothy. She started when he was still a babe–in–arms: "From infancy you have known the holy Scriptures," Paul reminded him (3:15).

Eunice honored and revered God's Word in her home as her mother before her had done. She embodied Ps. 19:7:

The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

Timothy grew up not only hearing her speak and pray God's truth but seeing her live it too. Her example was not lost on him. Lois and Eunice wholeheartedly embraced the charge of Dt. 6:6–7:

These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children.

By impress, God meant teach them over and over again. That's precisely what those who revere God's Word do: They study it, apply it, and impart it to others (Jas. 1:22–25). The process never stops, because the need for God's wisdom never ends. His wisdom is most accessible in His Word, for as Paul wrote Timothy, "the holy Scriptures … make you wise for salvation … equipped for every good work" (2 Tim. 3:15–17).

Today's church has even more of God's wisdom to study, apply, and impart than did Lois and Eunice, who lived before the New Testament existed. Now, in the person of Jesus, we have "all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Col. 2:3). But does He have our full devotion? Does His truth have our full commitment? Are we, like Lois and Eunice, wisely passing on a heritage of reverential faithfulness to the Timothys we influence?
