In the pictures I saw of Jesus when I was a child, he appeared mostly stoic and devoid of extremes. I saw in him neither joy nor sorrow, laughter nor tears, elation nor depression. His facial expressions were all somewhere safely in the middle. Similar to the way he was portrayed physically—not quite a Jew yet not quite a gentile either. Somewhere
