ON JANUARY 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court, in the now famous Roe v. Wade case, ruled that during the first six months (first two trimesters) of pregnancy the decision whether to abort a baby should be left to the mother and her physician. In Doe v. Bolton, the court effectively destroyed all safeguards for the fetus during the third trimester
