Jesus' Beatitudes stand in startling contrast to the values of His society—and ours.

Aren't the Beatitudes a kind of nicer Ten Commandments? a parishioner of mine asked, echoing a common misunderstanding: "You know, the positive ‘Blessed art thou' instead of the negative ‘thou shalt not'?"Certainly, the Beatitudes (Mt. 5:1–12) portray the positive attitudes and behaviors that draw the Father God's approval and reward.
