Does the Devil Talk to You?

I was talking to someone recently who doubted that God would speak to her personally. Although she asks God questions and waits in silence for Him to reply, what she hears in those quiet moments sounds to her just like her own thoughts.

I asked her to describe some of the things she hears during those times. When she did, I commented, “Those sound like the kinds of things God would say.” Although she nodded, I could tell she wasn’t convinced. For her, the problem wasn’t really the content so much as it was the mode of communication. My friend just really couldn’t imagine God talking to her and using her own thoughts to do it.

An idea came to me: “Mary,* do you think the enemy ever talks to you?”

“Oh yes, he does, far too often!”

“Does he use an audible voice, then?”

“No, not an audible voice.”

“How, then?”

“Well,” she said, hesitating, “I guess he talks to me through my own thoughts.” She smiled. “Yeah, I see what you’re saying. If the enemy talks to me using my own thoughts and he’s just a counterfeiter, then I suppose God might speak to me through my own thoughts, too. Okay, I need to rethink this.”

Mary was seeing a simple truth that it has taken me years to realize: God is spirit. Although He can speak to His children in audible voices, through angel visitations, dreams, burning bushes, talking donkeys, or any other spectacular means, He most often speaks to us Spirit-to-spirit, in His still small voice (see 1 Kings 19:12; 1 Corinthians 2:10-14).

We do need to discern what we are hearing, of course. But I want to be careful not to miss God’s speaking to me simply because He often chooses to do it through my thoughts. What about you?

Actually, I totally understand what you're saying. I leave tomorrow on a mission trip with my daughter and 11 other young adults. And I have the same thoughts: Lord, what am I going to do when I can't sneak away to be with you? I too will let you know!!!

My thoughts on does the devil talk to you. One verse comes to mind. And mary kept these things in her heart in the days of me first becoming a christian having no understanding of keeping the personal promises of GOD in my heart i like joseph telled everyone the personal promises the LORD had spoke to me.The then enemy took hold of them and kept coming as an angel of light (light is revelation)all be it deseption and filled me full of lies to the time of the promises coming to pass setting me up for disapointment after disapointment untill i asksed the LORD to cut off that stinking lieing devils head. At which HE did the pain that was caused to me was tormenting AND VERY HURTFULL AND I BLAMED GOD.But GOD works all things for good for those that love HIM in keeping things inour heart and not reveling them we can ponder them and in pondering them it opens up in even more revelation and grows on the inside so that it becaomes life sustaining and comfort to our souls it then becomes so big that the seed of promises is birthed into your world at just the right time bringig new life joy and pupose just like mary a child of promises is born. whatever the LORD speaks is eternal and true and enveloped in peace. its an absolute without the possibility of change the devil may promises you the earth just like he did to JESUS but there is no truth in him and he cannot deliver anything he is totaly defeated in having any lasting victory over you amen just a few thoughts

Just last week I began reading a text by Thelma Wells (one of the Ladies of Faith team members). The book, entitled Don't Give In...God Wants You to Win: Preparing for Victory in the Battle of Life, talks about how Satan comes to rob, kill and destroy and one way he does this is by talking to us - whispering in our ears and hearts little thoughts to rob us of peace, kill our confidence and destroy our relationships with God, family and friends. Yes, unfortunately, he speaks to all of us. The good news is that we have a greater power and we can just tell him to shut up! Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand! (Ephesians 6:10-18)

I have found that writing down what you hear from God is really helpful. You can go back to your writing and discern if God was really speaking. I encourage you to set aside 10 minutes to practice writing down what you hear from God each day. Your commitment in learning how to hear Him pleases Him so much. He will help you if you earnestly seek Him. The deepest part of your soul will know His loving voice when He speaks.

I once visited the Olympia Mountain Range in Washington. It was so beautiful I kept repeating to myself as I hiked on a path, "And God created the heavens & the earth." When I came down off the mountain I drove past a motel sign with a smiley face that said - "God said let there be light and there was light." I knew in my heart, because God has spoken before to me in this manner, that this was from God. I carry a camera with me now. When God speaks to me in these ways I take a picture and have a collage of pictures on my walls at home & the office that remind me of Him when I need encouragement. In a season of hardship in my life I would find smiley face stickers or antenna balls with smiley faces showing up where I least expected them. God would remind me to smile, He is with me and He loves me! The rest of my family saw this happening also and now they listen and watch as I do. If you seek Him, you will find Him.
