Church Without Walls by Jim Petersen

Your church is more than just a building, people, or a mission statement. Find out what your church really is and how to make it an exciting, thriving part of your community.

Description: The first-century Christians had to sort out Jesus from Judaism in order to become a people for all nations. Today, we have to sort out Jesus from religious traditions in order to make Him available to our nation.

That’s the challenge this book tackles: Will we be the church without walls, communicating a gospel free of traditional and cultural trappings?

Paradigm Shift In A Postmodern Age

I read "Church Without Walls" when it first came out in the early 90's and thought it was excellent then. I have just reread it (2005) and find it more applicatble today than it was in the 90's. If the church does not hear the wake up call the author is sounding it will become increasingly irrelevant in today's society. In our ministry among young military men and women, especially those who were raised in the church, we are finding that many are often bored with their religious experience largely because they have never been encouraged and trained to actively accept the responsibility to reach their friends for Jesus Christ and disciple them. Their feelings are often: "Is this all thre is?" Their brains are filled with Bible knowledge from years of attending one Bible Study after another, but don't understand how to apply what they've learned in the real world, outside of their own person. Church Without Walls focuses on the need the church has to raise up spiritual multipliers and send them out rather than building ever larger groups of pew warmers taught to sit still and listen, spectators. I refer to what the author talks about, the church's attempt to get people to attend their services, as a "Field of Dreams" mentality; if we build it they will come. Church Without Walls does an excellent job of delineating the necessary paradigm shift the church must make if it is to fulfill the Great Commission in a postmodern culture! This is a book I will recommend and use often in our ministry to train other leaders.
