The best children's Bible ever!

My son has many children's Bibles, but My First Message is simply the best! God's word so well written for our precious children. We love the Pray and Live section and all the great illustrations! Since buying my son's I have given several as gifts, and everyone love it! To God be the Glory and thanks Mr. Peterson!

Great!! Only one issue that I see

I am so glad to see this childrens version of The Message - its the perfect (not dumbed down) first bible! My son loves the pictures and of course looking for manty! My one issue is skipping over Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Issac and Ishmael to get directly to Jacob and Esau... However I am hoping this trend will continue and by the time my son is ready to move up there will be a "Message for Tweens" and a special "Message for Teens" I hope these would keep some pictures. Anyhow Don't pass this one by - GET IT!

Wonderful and life-changing

This is the book that got my daughter excited and enthusiastic about prayer, talking about God, and reading Bible stories. When I adopted her from foster care, she had no positive experience with religion and very little understanding of prayer or the Bible. I tried so many books and activities, and this was the one that really brought God into her life. The "Pray" and "Live" sections bring the story to life, the questions throughout each story let the child interact with the story and think about what is being read, and the illustrations are beautiful and fun (especially looking for Manty the praying mantis). I am so grateful for this book.

Excellent Parent-Child Devotional

I bought "My First Message" for my daughter on the eve of starting Kindergarten because she didn't want a "baby bible" anymore. I spent close to an hour in a local bookstore reading through different children's bibles. I bought "My First Message" because it was the most comprehensive and accurate bible for young children I could find. Yes, in the story "Sin and the Fall," Eugene Peterson's words in "The Message" are misquoted to say that a woman will find it painful to please her husband. The correct translation should read "You'll want to please your husband, but he'll lord it over you." However, the previous reviewer is wrong about the mistake in the Jacob and Esau story. In Genesis 25, Esau does indeed trade his birthright for a bowl of stew. It's not until Genesis 28 that Jacob (in cohoots with his mother)tricks Isaac into giving Jacob the blessing. That part of the story is left out of "My First Message." Overall, I've been thrilled with this bible and the opportunities for faith sharing it has enabled between my daughter and I. She begs to be read more than one story every day. When she's sad, she asks for me to read out of the bible. Her prayers are now much richer than "God Bless everyone in the world..." prayers that just stall going to sleep. If you want an opportunity to engage your child in scripture...if you want a devotional guide to help you think about the meaning of scripture with your child...if you want a creative way to help your child live out scripture, I heartily recommend that you share "My First Message" with your child.

Buyer Beware!

I would not recommend buying this for your child. I bought it for my son and was dismayed with the glaring inaccuracies in it. First of all, the Bible does not mention that it will be painful for a woman to be with her husband (and no 4-8 year old needs to read that!). Second, the story of Jacob and Esau was absolutely wrong. Jacob and his mother tricked Isaac into giving Jacob Esau's blessing, Esau didn't offer to trade it for some food. Those errors occur within the first few stories. I was extremely disappointed and quite sure Eugene Peterson would be upset to see his translation misused this way.
