The Chase

The Chase does a good job of painting a picture of the holy lifestyle in a way that teens can relate to and understand. It challenges Christian teens to go deeper in their walk with God using contemporary illustrations . This woul be a great resource to use with small groups or Sunday School classes of teens.

Updated and accessible classic on discipleship

There's a classic title from NavPress (1978) called The Pursuit of Holiness. There was subsequently an edition aimed at the next generation called "The Chase: Pursuing Holiness in Your Everyday Life" by Jerry Bridges. The Chase is compact, easy to read, yet both deep and practical. It's about being a disciple that follows hard after Christ. Each chapter is brief, and these cover topics like 'Holiness isn't an Option', 'Obedience, not Victory', 'Help in the Daily Battle', 'Holiness in an Unholy World', and 'The Joy of Holiness.' While The Chase is aimed at teens, it's highly suitable for older adults as well. The material is well written and engaging. I'll have to go back sometime and read The Pursuit of Holiness. It felt at times like the quest for brevity worked against the fact that this is not something easy to describe (much less do). The relationship between the work of the Holy Spirit and our wills, His strength and ours, is complex. I like the description on the back cover: "You won't read this and 'voila'-you're holy. But you'll read it and be challenged to start the process. Holiness is about following Christ - chasing after Him - and letting Him transform every segment of your life." Amen to that.()

The Chase by Jerry Bridges with Jay and Jen Howver

The Chase is effectively Jerry Bridges' classic The Pursuit of Holiness, translated into teen-talk. By looking at sixteen aspects of the pursuit after holiness (the chase) Bridges encourages young people not to give in to temptation, but instead to persevere in pursuing holiness. I found the book challenging, yet practical and easy-to-understand. Bible quotes are generally taken from The Message which fits with the style of the book. I particularly liked that the book encouraged a radical lifestyle that wouldn't settle for second best. At every opportunity the authors predict any questions or excuses that might come about, and shoot them down early. One thing I found distracting was that it seemed at times like the authors were perhaps trying a bit too hard to be 'cool' to appeal to the teenage audience. Also, the font used means that at times words are not printed correctly, which I found quite frustrating. Overall however, I felt challenged and encouraged by this book. I'm not sure I'd recommend it over The Pursuit of Holiness, but I would recommend it more generally to every Christian. Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The Chase

The Chase by Jerry Bridges with Jay and Jen Howver The Chase is a contemporary version of the classic The Pursuit of Holiness. Here is just a quick excerpt from the book that you can find on page 21. “God calls every Christian to live a holy life. No one gets out of it. Holiness isn’t something just pastors, missionaries, and a few dedicated volunteers chase after. Every Christian of every nation – rich or poor, educated or uneducated, famous or unknown – is called to be holy.” This is a very easy read; the chapters are short but packed with great information. What is holiness? How are we to be holy? Holiness is not an option, it is a daily battle. How do we train ourselves to be holy? Can we be holy in an unholy world? These are just some of the topics that are covered in this book. I think this would be a great study or devotional for college students or a new believer that wants a deeper relationship with God. They use The Message for Bible scriptures. My only cause for concern is that the type set seems to be a little off at times. Either the words are too close together or spread out too far. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to live a holy life.

It's Like a Toolbox on Holiness

The word Holy is understood as Perfect, No blemishes, No sin, No mistakes, virtually unattainable so why even bother, right? In "The Chase"was birthed from a more mature, earlier version published in the 70's "The Pursuit of Holiness", Jerry Bridges, a renowned author also a Bible teacher, is able to put Holiness into perspective in a much easier way to understand. I like it because: 1. Scriptures and Accuracy : Plenty of scriptures to both illustrate, and back up their points, and they were ACCURATE. 2. The Sources: The material, as far as scriptures used, was taken from several Bible sources, including NIV, NASB, NLT, and The Message. I'm only familiar with the NIV and NLT. But by using The Message also, it allows people to better understand a subject that is commonly misinterpreted, Holiness. 3. Modern: I've never read the Parent of this book, Pursuit of Holiness, but I enjoyed the dialect that Bridges chose to use because in order to connect with the generation you're targeting, you need to catch their attention, and hold it. 4. Relate-ability: Throughout the book are examples, or references to certain types of people, or attitudes, or habits that I found I could relate to. That wasn't necessarily a good thing. Sometimes I related to it personally, and other times I related because I knew the type of person it referred to. 5. Tools: Not only does it teach you what it truly means to live a Holy life,it also gives you many tools to use in order to help you on your journey. There are only 2 cons to the book that I found: 1. Slow Start: When I first started reading, it took me just a little to get into it, simply for the fact that the point they were trying to make about the Importance of Holiness in relationship to God, was overkill. That wasn't so terrible though that it kept me from wanting to read it. 2. Text: Also, there were issues with the text in the book as far as appearance. I'm not sure if this copy is an actual finalized copy as in stores, but some of the typing in certain areas ran into each other, or half of one word was connected to the next word. Again, this was not a big issue with me, and has nothing to do with the message in the book. I only point it out because I'm asked to give an honest review of the book. Overall this is a great book for anybody, not just young people, but anybody looking for an easy to understand book on the subject of Holiness and pursuing it. The Chase

The Chase by Jerry Bridges is an updated version of The Pursuit of Holiness. Jay and Jen Howver have given The Pursuit of Holiness a face lift for a new generation. They have done a great job of providing current illustrations and smoothing out some of the complicated language that makes The Pursuit of Holiness inaccessible to younger audiences. I do have a couple critiques of The Chase. The first is that the book uses The Message for most of its scripture references. The Message is a nice paraphrase of scripture and it is very poetic. But, there seemed to be a bit of a clash between the heady topic of holiness and the smoothed out scripture. The high school kids I know who would be drawn to reading The Chase would also be kids who are rather steeped in their Bibles and would be thrown off by the changes to verses they'd memorized in Awana. A second critique is that the attempts to update the language sometimes get a little goofy. For instance, "This isn't just food for your head (69)." I think this is an update from, "This isn't just food for thought," which probably could have been left alone. Overall, I recommend The Chase. It is always difficult to update a classic and I feel that the Howver's have done a good job overall. This would be a great book for a high school small group to read together or a good gift for a student in your life. Great book for all

The Chase by Jerry Bridges is adapted from the classic, The Pursuit of Holiness, by the same author. The content is the same but it is written for a younger audience. This book is about how to chase after holiness, or become more Christlike, in our everyday lives. The Chase is written in the dialect of today's teen. I found this distracting because apparently I, now in my 30's, no longer speak this language. Phrases such as, "before that totally trips you up" and "but don't get all bummed out" are commonplace in this book. The content, however, is excellent and applicable to everyone. This book is serious about calling sin what it is - sin. The author also does a great job of offering practical ways to pursue holiness. This book would be a wonderful resource in discipling a young person. A short study guide in the back of the book would have been valuable addition to aid this goal. Perhaps if they revise the book when the language becomes outdated (:-) they can add this feature. Holiness for the Younger Christian

This book is based upon Jerry Bridge's book "The Pursuit of Holiness." It is written for a young adult audience and makes the concepts much easier for younger people to understand. It really is full of suggestions for dealing with issues in your daily life and it helps readers to understand what it means to pursue holiness in their lives. I think this is an excellent book for young adult readers and even older readers who are wanting to really look at what it means to pursue holiness. Jerry Bridges has written many books on trusting God, God's grace and living a holy life. His books are always full of thought provoking statements and you cannot read them without being changed. This book is no exception to that. As with all the books I have read by this author, I highly recommend this book for young adult readers or even adult who are young and new in their Christian journey.

Pursuing a Holier Life

The Chase Pursuing Holiness in Your Everyday Life Written by: Jerry Bridges, with Jay and Jen Howver Published by: Th1nk Books, an imprint of NavPress As Christians we all long to be holy, or at least we should, but what is holiness? And how can we achieve it? Or can we even truly achieve? This book answers those questions and more. Who the book is for: The Chase is supposed to be for teens, but it is appropriate for adults as well. What I liked: There is much truth in this book that will help to lead us to a holier life. The chapters are very short, which is always a plus with me. The book is small and light, yet packed with a bunch of information. What I didn’t like: The book should have been proofread (or is the font supposed to look that way?) There are many times where one word or letter would run into the next, and spots where there are spaces where there shouldn’t be spaces. I didn’t like the version of the Bible that they chose to use when quoting it, I think that they could have used a “deeper”, less simplified version, rather than the Message, since they were explaining the verses themselves, anyway. My conclusion: This is a good book calling us to a holier life. I give The Chase four out of five stars. I received this book free to review from NavPress. The opinions expressed in this review are my true thoughts and feeling regarding this book. I am disclosing this information in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Excellent!

The Chase, written by Jerry Bridges with Jay and Jen Howver is a contemporary adaption of The Pursuit of Holiness, a well-known classic also published by NavPress. Anyone who desires that their life reflect more of the image of the Lord Jesus Christ and are willing to begin the process of Holiness by having a heart yearning to do the will of God and to please Him and glorify Him in every aspect of their lives will benefit from the wisdom given, and biblical truths taught, in this book. As I read this book, many Scriptures were brought to the forefront of my mind, as I was reminded of essential truths such as: I am responsible for my actions, and have the provision of God's provision and unmerited grace to live in accordance with His will; Sin cannot tell me how to live (Romans 6:14); That victory and a holy life can be mine through the purity of Christ; and That I am commanded to be holy as He is holy (1 Peter 1:16). This book was easily read and I can see it being especially popular amongst younger readers as well as busy individuals due to its short chapters, which range from 2-12 pages each. I would recommend The Chase for personal reading as well as for a small group study.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. Moving

I absolutely love this book. It has so many good quotes and scripture passages. for some reason it seems like everything he says can apply to my life. This book had me at the first couple lines (Romans 6:14) "Sin cannot tell you how to live, for you are not living under that old tyranny any longer. you are living in the freedom of God." something like that. but it is an incredible book. It really changes your views on holiness and how you look at sin.
