Great for New and Experienced Believers!

The subtitle to this book is “turn to the liberating power of the cross…every day.” Jerry’s book describes the gospel in a detailed way, and reminds Christians that it is only through the eloquence of Calvary and the resurrection that the promises of Christ are fulfilled in our day to day existence. From describing the cup of God’s wrath as “exhausted on Jesus” to delineating the assurances we have of salvation, this book is a great tool for new and long term believers. This would be an excellent Sunday School study (and there is a good study guide in the back of the book) – one that would challenge new believers to live their faith to the fullest and remind long term believers that the Truth of the gospel continues to be relevant to them. I have already used the “exhausted on Jesus” term in conversations with other believers – reminding them (as this book reminded me) that we have no condemnation, that we can choose only to be exhausted for Him as He was for us or to be limited in our life of faith by the fleeting moments of living in a sinful, broken world. From the first page to the last, this book had relevance and impact for me. I needed the reminders that I am forgiven, that Jesus won’t ever leave me, that the Holy Spirit is available to empower me to live in a state of grace, and that I can’t earn my salvation through the things I do or don’t do to further the Kingdom. If you have spent any time at all wondering how the gospel could be true for you even after you’ve done this or that – read this book, and go back to the Bible and see how Jerry clearly brings the truth home. If you have spent your life in a religious setting, and your salvation feels forced – read this book, and go back to the Bible and see how Jerry clearly brings the truth home. After reading this book, I am going back to the Word on a daily basis, and remembering the Gospel that permeates every page, is for me, for every day. The cross is liberating – the chains of sin are gone, the power of the Holy Spirit is upon us, and we are united with the victorious. Praise the Lord! The Gospel for Real Life by Jerry Bridges

This book is an investigation into the full impact of the gospel on our daily lives. Bridges looks at a series of different angles to ask what was achieved at Jesus' cross, looking at its already completed effects, the day-to-day impact of living in light of the gospel, and the eternal consequences for us and for others. There are similar books to this out there, such as The Cross of Christ by John Stott, but I don't think that takes anything away from this book. Jerry Bridges has a good way of communicating, and he uses it to full effect in this book. The content is foundational from a Christian perspective but not presented in a childish way, so I'd certainly recommend this book to all new Christians, as well as anyone who has been a Christian for a while but doesn't feel that they have every basic nailed (i.e. all of us). It's very easy to read; Bridges doesn't shy away from the challenging long words like propitiation, but he's good at explaining exactly what he means. The only potential problem with this book is one which I think is unavoidable - a lot of the concepts presented here aren't that practically applicable due to them being about spiritual attitude, faith, and so on. So although there is a good chapter on sanctification if you're looking for practical tips on how to pursue purity I don't think this is the place to find them. Excellent book!

This is the perfect book for getting a clear understanding of the Gospel. It explains in great detail the meaning of what Jesus did on the cross... why He died, what He accomplished, and why we need to accept what He did for us. The author states "We cannot begin to understand the true significance of the cross unless we understand something of the holiness of God and the depth of our sin." After reading this book, you will have a greater knowledge of God and His holiness along with the realization that "We bring nothing to our salvation except our sin that made it necessary." Only one chapter I had a trouble with... the chapter on Faith. And he even points out that you may disagree. He says faith is a GIFT from God and that God makes us spiritually 'alive'... so that we may then believe. Sounds like predestination to me... not free will. He explains his belief of this in great detail and yet I still don't agree. I'm sure I will look into it further. That being said, it is only one chapter that I take issue with and it by no means takes away from the mass of great information in this book. You may agree with his view on the subject. This book was very well written. I began to underline the parts that I wanted to remember or even quote in my review... but there were so many good points, I would have underlined or shared most of the book! Jesus said to go and preach the Gospel. But how many of us have a full understanding of the Gospel ourselves? I thought I knew until the question was put directly to me and I realized how difficult it was to share with someone else. I began to ask myself "What is the Gospel? What do I tell people when they ask?" Then I set out on a quest to find out. I'm so glad I had the chance to read this book for review. If you want to share more than "Jesus, loves you", then you need to read this book! Plain and simple.

If You Want to Learn the Big Words

"The Gospel for Real Life" is the third Jerry Bridges book I’ve read. I wasn't disappointed in this one either! In it, Bridges explains all the big, scary words of theology (propitiation, expiation, redemption, sanctification, and so on) in the order they take place along the Christian journey and in terms the average reader can easily understand. He explains that these aren’t words we have to know and understand in order to be Christians. (All you need to know is that God loves you, but your sin separates you from Him. He sent Jesus to die on the cross for your sins, so He could restore relationship with you. If you tell God you are sorry for your sins and receive Jesus as Your Savior, you are a Christian. Welcome to the family of God!) Understanding the big words, however, helps us know and appreciate more fully all that Christ has done and is doing for us every day. Bridges goal is to help his readers appreciate and experience “The unsearchable riches of Christ” that come from knowing the Gospel (a big word that means, "Good News"). Bridges uses both Scripture and personal experience stories to help readers understand and apply the concepts of each chapter. There are sixteen in all, with an 8-week study guide at the back of the book. "The Gospel for Real Life" would be an excellent text for a small group or a growing Christians’ Sunday school class. I enjoyed reading it on my own as well. I’m happy to recommend this book.

What Does the Gospel Mean to You?

As Christians, we all claim to know about the gospel. That is what when learn in church and when we read our Bibles, right? According to Jerry Bridges in this book, most Christians know very little about the gospel or understand its actual implications for their daily lives. He breaks the gospel down into the basics and explains each thoroughly in a way that I have not read before. He brings the practical into the picture. The gospel is something we must live by every day of our lives and Bridges shares with us what that would mean in the life of a believer. I liked his explanations and his use of modern stories to make his points. It gave me a more in depth understanding of the meaning of the cross and the gospel. Jerry Bridges challenges Christians in his thought provoking writings. The is one of several books I have read by this author and he does not disappoint you when he promises understanding. This book is true to his writing style and straightforward in its delivery. He bases all his writing on the word of God in the scriptures and gives references throughout his writings. I highly recommend this book for Christians wanting to do some further study on the meaning of the gospel. I received a complimentary copy of this book from NavPress for review. I was not obligated to provide a positive review. The opinions in this review are my own.

"The Gospel for Real Life" by 'Jerry Bridges' -- Book Review

“The Gospel for Real Life” by ‘Jerry Bridges’ from NavPress is a fantastic book on the subject of Gospel. The clarity with which the subject has been handled makes this book special. Jerry Bridges is an experienced Bible teacher and a member of the Navigator Collegiate Ministry Group. Initially Jerry claims that this book is not meant to be theological treatise but intends to be ‘Gospel 101’. However, I would say that “The Gospel for Real Life” is a theological treatise in its own flair. The greatest attraction in this book has been the lucid writing style of Jerry. I finished this book in two sittings and thoroughly enjoyed reading the same. The message was absolutely unambiguous and easy to comprehend. In a sense, this book is about the unsearchable riches of Christ. The significance of the cross, the pleasure of obedience, justice and reconciliation, the gift of God, sanctification and the right standing with God have been explained to the readers in a compelling way. More importantly, the book also contains eight weeks of bible study contents suitable for group study. The content is uplifting and accurate to hit our senses; and they continue to evoke and flood out our hearts. Jerry has written this book in a non - jargony style without using any complex language. It makes even a young believer to absorb the incredible truths of the Gospel with ease. I believe that this book will be enjoyed by both new believers and mature and grown Christians alike. I would give this one five out of five stars. Please note that I received this book from NavPress Publishers through its book review bloggers program in exchange for an honest review. Also be informed that the opinions I have expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

A book to read over and over

The author sums up the entire book right at the beginning with this comment: "All of us, regardless of how long we have known Christ, need to bathe ourselves in the gospel every day. I pray this book will help us do that." And I think he definitely succeeds in his goal with this fantastic little book. The Gospel for Real Life is neither long, nor complicated, nor full of big words. It's a simple, straightforward preaching of the gospel. It covers every aspect of believing in Christ, from why we would want to be followers to what Jesus did on the cross for us, to reconciliation to God to the Great Commission. And everything in between. This is the kind of book that I need to keep on my nightstand and constantly be reading through, so that I keep my mind on the importance of the gospel in my every day life. I think it's easy for us as believers to forget the depths of our need and the enormity of what Jesus did for us. Daily life gets busy and we get caught up in the little things. But this book helped me focus on the gospel and be thinking during my day about what it all means for my life. As I said earlier, the book isn't complicated and the chapters aren't long, so it's easy to read through one or two chapters at a time. Although brief, each chapter is full of simply presented truth, good examples, and lots of Bible verses. In addition to the 16 short chapter in The Gospel for Real Life, there's also a nice guide at the back for individual or group study. If you're looking for an excellent book for your devotion or Bible study, I highly recommend considering this book. Excellent book

The Gospel For Real Life by Jerry Bridges In this book, Mr. Jerry Bridges seeks to offer assurance of forgiveness to believers, while also explaining the wonderful gospel message of salvation to underwrite his points. Bringing out various promises and praises from the Bible, he writes with a balance of both gentleness and a no nonsense, matter of fact, this-is-how-it-is style. I really, really, recommend this book. It is very encouraging and filled with scripture. I did not notice any errors or anything objectionable. It is well written with an easy to read, conversational style of bringing out points and showing the how and why of the gospel. The gospel for real life receives 10 out of 10 stars. ★★★★★★★★★★ Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. Expected Lucado, Got Piper

The Gospel for Real Life is a systematic look at the Gospel through the lens of covenant theology. Bridges approaches the topic in a basic academic tone, making it at least approachable for the common reader if not completely accessible. He begins with our need for salvation because of sin’s hold on our life, works through God’s law, the death and resurrection of Christ, the imputation of Christ’s righteousness, and the hope of transformation for the believer today and in eternity. While I did not find anything particularly wrong with Bridges’ theology, there were two points I was disappointed by. The first is that I was expecting Max Lucado and got John Piper. The title is a little misleading. I guess I imagined a book with the sub-heading “Turn to the Liberating Power of the Gospel . . . Every Day” would have more common man/everyday applications than just to “pray/remember the Gospel everyday.” The second disappointment comes because unlike John Piper, Bridges focuses on the means more than the end. The good news of the Gospel is all about reconciliation with God, which means we get to know God. We can talk to Him, and He’ll talk to us. Bridges acknowledges the importance of reoncilation and prayer, but doesn't spend much time on either, which detracts from the Gospel message. Understanding how our relationship with God is possible is a worthy pursuit, but not as worthy as the relationship itself. The Gospel for Real Life is a great book if you want to know about God. If you want to know God, you can start with this book, but then repent, study the scriptures, do what they say, and most importantly seek His face. A review copy was received from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Opened My Eyes

Do you ever find yourself feeling complacent when you hear the Gospel and wish you could restore the freshness of its meaning? Or maybe you are a new believer trying to grasp the significance of the cross? Whether you are a new believer or an experienced one, in The Gospel for Real Life: Turn to the Liberating Power of the Cross…Every Day, Jerry Bridges explains how the Gospel applies to your life every single day. The author first starts with the bad news. If you thought you weren’t that bad of a sinner or that you don’t sin every single day, the author is quick to prove you wrong. It is against the backdrop of understanding the depth of your sin and then the awareness of the vast contrast with the holiness of God that you can fully understand the meaning and significance of the cross. Then the author delivers the good news. The Gospel DOES result in forgiveness and eternal life, but it also includes the inheritance you can currently grasp right here on earth. God wants you to enjoy His “unsearchable riches,” in the middle of life and all its difficulties. The benefits of the Gospel are available not just in your initial salvation but in your day-to-day acceptance of it throughout life. Intimidating theological terms (propitiation, expiation, progressive sanctification, etc.) are explained without feeling like a systematic theology primer. He uses common life illustrations to help the reader grasp the full meaning. He goes further to display the importance of the concepts of these terms and how they are about living out your faith, not just knowledge you hold in your head. The study guide at the back would be great for either personal Bible study or small groups with much opportunity for discussion and application. I loved this book immensely! It enriched the meaning of the cross for me and pushed me to think hard about my faith and the Holy Spirit’s work in me. Even more, I learned how I have failed to grasp all that I am entitled to through Christ and am opening my eyes to what it means to become partakers and beneficiaries of all He did in both His life and death. Teaching real truth

Author Jerry Bridges does something very special in this book. He takes sometimes very complex thinking and distils it into very simple language. Illustrated by practical examples, he talks very ably about reconciliation, assurance, sanctification and mercy by way of teaching us real truths about the unsearchable riches of Christ. I found this a challenging read in the sense that it asked hard questions of the reader, but an enjoyable read in the way that truths were illustrated with examples, the Bible was expounded and the Saviour commended. This is not a book either that is detached from current times. Examples are drawn from modern times, confronting modern thinking, current standards and the church’s place in the world as a beacon of hope and uprightness. I enjoyed a section that highlighted particularly God’s provision, protection, encouragement, comfort and discipline. We often forget God’s almighty hand and forget sincere praise and thanks in our regular petitions. This is a great book about the great challenge of the Gospel in confronting us with the realities of our lives and of the eternity to come. I would recommend the study guide published as part of this publication – it is excellent for bible study groups to look at the book and the source Scriptures in more detail. This is a book I will share with others.

Great Discipleship Tool

I am having a Bible study with new believers (and a few who are searching) and this book has been a wonderful tool in laying out in a sensible and clear way what Christ did on the cross and why! 16 chapters equals a nice 16 week study. I have purchased 30 so far and am buying 15 more today!

Great Truth

Paul reminded the Corinthians about the gospel. We needed to be remined each day why we need the gospel even as Christians. This book goes through the gospel message even for us who has heard it before and put our faith in Christ.
