Attending college is both a prideful and stressful point in a young adult’s life. J. Budziszewski’s How to Stay Christian in College teaches college bound students, current college students, and parents what to expect at college and how to succeed spiritually socially, and academically. The book focuses on worldviews, campus myths, and how to cope. Budziszewski opens with a concise overview of Christianity. He focuses on what a healthy relationship with God looks like. He goes on to explain how to deal with questions from non-Christian peers, classes that conflict with beliefs, social activities, dating, politics, and church attendance.
Having recently graduated from college, I can say that much of the information provided in this book is accurate. However, I personally did not experience religious opposition to the extent that Budziszewski outlines. I never had a professor that mocked my religion or failed to give me space to state my beliefs. Nevertheless, I imagine that Budziszewski’s findings are more precise at other campuses.
Budziszewski perfectly illustrates what students will experience as they travel to a new location that is alienated from their friends and family. He shows students how to form beneficial friendships and engage in appropriate dating. Many other compelling points are made throughout the book. The most powerful for me concerns the almightiness of God. Budziszewski passionately depicts how humans belong to God. Using a real estate metaphor, he explains, we only have temporary possession of our bodies and not title. Thus, every part of our life must be dedicated to God.
I would highly recommend How to Stay Christian in College to people of all ages. While the book is targeted towards a certain group, its messages concerning worship, friendship, and marriage can benefit anyone. Budziszewski’s book is an entertaining and fast read that can be easily completed among the busyness of college preparation. Using Budziszewski’s advice will allow students to have a much safer, enjoyable, and productive time at college.

Solid Advice, Handy Format
In How to Stay Christian in College, author J. Budziszewski offers information, advice, and ideas for students who want to hold on to their Christian faith during their college years.
The book is divided into four major sections:
•Introduction - Why is this book necessary? and How this book can help
•Worldviews - What God thinks of the world, what the world thinks of itself, and talking with non-Christian friends
•Campus Myths - Myths about the search for knowledge, love and sex, politics
•How to Cope - Coping in campus social life, campus religious life, and in the classroom
I liked this book a lot. The author candidly addresses many important points, while writing in short sections that are quick to read. He provides realistic and useful ways to respond to people whose views differ from our own--as well as reminders to respond respectfully and calmly. Section headers and highlighted keywords help the reader find specific parts, which makes this a solid go-to reference, as well.

How to Stay Christian in College by J. Budziszewski
This book is a manual written for current and future university students, designed to give them good preparation for coping with the spiritual battleground that is the uni campus.
I was excited about this book. It seemed to directly address a real problem, talking about real issues and not backing down. It was also really practical, so even though the opening chapters were talking about theology, the application was wonderfully clear.
But that said, I think the book let itself down when it tried to become too practical. In particular some imaginary conversations were recorded to show how certain logic can overcome incorrect worldviews, but it just didn't seem realistic enough for me.
The two chapters on sex and politics stood out as particularly unhelpful. While I fully agreed with almost everything the author said, the analogies were flawed and talked about things which don't seem that much of a concern any more. Maybe it's because I'm from the UK but politics didn't massively interest anyone I knew when I was at uni!
Overall I think this book's heart is in the right place. It will certainly encourage Christian teenagers to enter university prepared to discuss their opinions in an informed manner. That said, I don't think this would do much more than provide ammunition for a teenager who was ready to rebel at 18.

Staying Christian in College
How to Stay Christian in College by J. Budziszewski is a must read for every Christian young person planning to attend college, secular or otherwise. Being the product of a Christian college and knowing many young people who have attended similar institutions, I recommend this as required reading for them as well. It is not always a given that one finds a consistent and articulated Christian worldview on a Christian college campus.
Budziszewski speaks from experience. He is professor of philosophy and government at University of Texas in Austin, and was an atheist as a young person, He knows well the atmosphere and lifestyle challenges that young people face on the college campus.
The book is designed as a resource guide. In the chapters, Dr. Budziszewski attempts to explode some of the myths that students face at the university. Whether the issue is postmodernism, politics, pluralism, or sexual freedom, there is great help to found in these pages. The book can be read from beginning to end or the chapters can be consulted for help with the individual topics.
I think this book should be given to Christian high school seniors. Many of the issues that college students face are present in seed form in high school. It would help to identify pitfalls before it is too late.
I do not think that a Christian college is necessarily right for every young person. Certainly, the message of the gospel needs to be shared on the university campus. But not every Christian young person is equipped to face the challenges of university life. Budziszewski’s work will do much to help address that need.

Every Christian teen should read this book
Without a doubt, every single high school church youth group in America should be reading and discussing this book in their small groups.
The author, J. Budziszewski, is a guy who has been there, done that and is still working on a college campus. He knows what challenges face our nation's christian college students. Budziszewski was once a Christian college student facing questions and issues on campus. Eventually he just walked away from God. After a long winding path, J. Budziszewski did find his way back to God and, interestingly, is currently a college professor. He's also the dad of two college-aged daughters. Without a doubt, this guy knows what he's talking about. Budziszewski draws moral and spiritual lines in the sand, standing firm on his believes. He reveals more of his own struggles with "the church" as an institution in an insightful article found at http://www.ignatiusinsight.com/.
The book How to Stay Christian in College is written for high schoolers but doesn't mince words or subject matter. Want to know what sort of belief systems will be encountered in college? They are listed in the book. Want to know what type of political, social and sexual ideas are available in college? Descriptions are in this book, too. So are discussions on dating, cults and dealing with hostile professors.
So what's the best thing about this book? Well, it's not just a big old list of scary things to frighten every teen considering college. This book truly provides tools for equipping Christian teens. The author wants teens to be aware and prepared. And to stay Christian in college.
