Trying hard to be Christan-y chick lit
Lauren sets her matchmaking skills to work on just about everyone she knows, getting her into funny, borderline disastrous situations. She learns that even her best intentions are no match for matches made in heaven (including her own!).
A fast read, the first book in the Lauren Holbrook series is conversational at its best, rambling at its worst; sometimes witty and charming, sometimes dragging. Like the coffee-worship--it was cute at first, but after a while it just got tired.
Miss Match was a fun read, but didn't get me completely hooked. If secular chick lit's titillating scenes make you uncomfortable, here the overdose of religious symbols will (e.g. Bible study scenes, Scripture passages quotes). Too obvious and too set-up, they jarred me whenever I started to get absorbed in the story.
At the end, the insights-and-lessons-learned conclusion stuck out like they were planted there for a meaningful, punchy ending (which is a sure way to fail at giving a meaningful, punchy ending).
I would recommend it to pre-teens looking for an alternative to the typical young adult fiction. It may have more value in terms of biblical values and spiritual reminders, but not much more in novel reading quality.

Miss Match
Twenty-three year old Lauren Holbrook is single, lives with her dad and couldn’t be happier, but one of her favorite hobbies is matchmaking. Lauren never wants to get married, but she loves to see her friends find true love, especially when she has something to do with it. Her latest project is trying to match her coworker Ruby together with her Bible study teacher Nick. This proves to be a challenge, not only to Lauren, but to Ruby and Nick as well. Adding to this challenge is Lauren’s new found confusion about her plan to never get married.
Life has been a little stressful for me lately and I have found that I have not been enjoying heavy or serious stories much and I was looking for something light and more importantly, funny. Miss Match was the answer. I was absolutely delighted by this story, and especially by Lauren. Her character was such a treat and so very likeable. At first, I found her a bit annoying, but the more I got to know her, the more I wanted to read.
One of this book’s strongest points is the dialogue, especially the dialogue between Lauren and her best friend Brandon. They were very good friends, but their teasing was funny and natural. Lauren is sassy and funny and adorable.
Miss Match is the first book in the Lauren Holbrook series and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series one of these days. I think Erynn Mangum is a writer whose books I will seek out in the future. I really enjoyed Miss Match and I strongly recommend it if your life needs a little comic relief.

Not Just for Twentysomethings
Any novel that features a coffee cup on the cover draws my attention. Erynn Mangum knows how to to entice the coffee-lover into the world of Lauren Holbrook, star of Miss Match.
Lauren's career in photography brings her in contact with families, business people, and singles from all walks of life. But her real devotion surfaces as she matches her friends with prospective mates. Just like Yente from Fiddler on the Roof, Lauren discovers that our assumptions about the perfect match are often wrong.
Mangum uses peripheral characters to emphasize Lauren's quest. The reader discovers that Lauren wants what all women want - true love.
While Miss Match and sequels, Rematch and Matchpoint, are geared toward twentysomething readers, this fortysomething reader enjoyed the lighthearted style of each story. The protagonist reminds me of Jane Austen's Emma, innocently compassionate in her intentions to see her dearest friends happily married. Ah, to be young again.
After comsuming the Lauren Holbrook trifecta, you will be happy to know that Erynn Mangum offers a new series, also with coffee on the cover, the first entitled Cool Beans to be released next month.

matchmaking!
Miss Match is quite hilarious. I like a good story about romantic mischief and coffee… and chocolate… a definite winner in my books! lol Miss Match is a bit of a coming of age as you watch Laren mature from a goofy girl to a little more mature goofy girl – realizing that when love happens it happens, even to her! As a Christian girl the attitude and the vocabulary was very much like I remember lol. She was easy to relate to and loveable. Quotes of famous books are thrown in there, like the Princess Bride had me rolling not to mention some Pride and Prejudice… and worst part about it is that I remember doing that with the “English accent” as well.

Miss Match
It's always refreshing to read a chick-lit after having not read one in a while. Here's the plot line of Miss Match...
Laurie Holbrock has a new desire in life, and that is to set every single person she knows up on a date with their future spouse. It seems to work out pretty well since they always end up getting married. When the pace isn't being met for Nick and Ruby, Laurie decides that it's time to get a little more involved and plots and ploys to get them together, and manages to some how possibly be in a relationship herself or maybe it's just part of the stage she has set. Who can be certain?
Here's what I like about the book: funny, random, odd humor and an easy and enjoyable read. Some of the one liners would actually make me laugh out loud but other times I would think I would slap Laurie across the face and tell her she is annoying.
Here's what I didn't like about the book: It is a christian chick-lit. There is nothing wrong with that but it bothered me when the characters would make references to scripture and not back it up. I wasn't carrying around my bible with me so I could make references every time a scripture was mentioned, so I didn't always understand the point that was trying to be made. Not all of us have the bible memorized and it really annoyed me by the time I finished reading the book.
Also, the characters are singles in their 20's and 30's, yet you would think they were in junior high. I daydreamed of similar plot ideas when I was 16.
That's about all that I didn't like about the book, it really was a fun read. I give it four stars. Now, I must go eat and drink something sweet, since I read about it every line.

...Match...
Wow, that is probably the best way of describing Miss Match. For such a young author it is an amazingly written novel. I dream of being able to write as well as Erynn, she has truly given me inspiration to further my dreams! No store around me carries Rematch, so it is on order now, it took me an afternoon to read the first book (i couldn't put it down), so im excited to see how interesting the second book is. It has just the perfect amount of romance and religion to keep you intrigged...WOW...i read the Christy Miller series, etc.-Miss Match def. gave that series a run for its money-they are my favorite books because the intertwine God in along with a great base line...I would recommend this book to any romantic, chocolate, and God loving person...

WOW she is only 23???
I can not believe the maturity and wit this first time (published) writer shows. It is hard for me to believe she is only 23. I have read some 'seasoned' writers before but Erynn's writing style peaked my interest and kept me wanting more. Once I started the book it was hard for me to put it down.
I am on the edge of my seat for number two.
Keep up the FANTASTIC work Erynn.

Miss Match!!
Miss Match is by far the best book I have read in a very long time. It is impossible to put down because of the hilarious and entertaining storyline. I appreciate the use of scripture that I was able to apply to my life. I could relate to many of the characters. I cannot wait for the sequel! I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a funny and charming novel.

Miss Match
I read Miss Match on the recomendation of a friend and loved it! Erynn Mangum did a superb job of making the characters realistic and ones I personally can relate to! The book kept me laughing the whole time reminding me of embarassing things Ive done much like Lauren Holbrook, but also sent a clear christian message that we have to wait and see what God has instore for us because he will bless us beyond our highest expectations and dreams! I would definately recommend this book, and am looking forward to rematch! Thank you so much for publishing such an entertaining christian novel, that is something very hard to come by today!
