deep book that is deeply satifying!
This is a deeply thought out book. Jan Johnson wrote a great book to help us understand who Jesus really was, so we can learn live the way he did. No phony "Christianish" rhetoric here. Johnson delves in deep to what being a Christian means and includes. She is a great writer and consistently makes me think in this book. Each chapter is devoted to a certain aspect of Christ's character and love for us. Jan Johnson also gives an extensive list at the end of each chapter on how to share and express what was learned in that chapter.
It can also be easily used as a personal Bible Study. This is not a book that is light on spirituality, Jan Johnson is an in depth teacher. She gets down to the nitty gritty way Jesus lived, and you'll be wanting to sink your teeth into it's meat. I would suggest walking through this book slowly, and utilizing all of the resources Jan has supplied. You'll definitely want to soak as much of this book as possible.

Christlikeness
“To facilitate this life with God, we become willing to do whatever we need to do to connect with God in the next ten minutes – even if it looks very different fro what the people around us do or what has been described in a book. As we connect with God, we change.” (20)
If you are dissatisfied with your devotional life and the practice of daily Bible reading then Jan's book is a great introduction to Ignatian Gospel contemplation and other spiritual disciplines. What seems to set it apart is that rather than presenting the disciplines, nor presenting them as methods for change, it authentically “places Jesus in the center of your vision and lets Jesus lead...” This is more than a devotional read it seeks to help us rediscover Jesus in a transformative way as we attend soul school. I found much more a multilevel and multifaceted curriculum thus it is not something you do once rather it introduces you to the reflective life. Thus each chapter can be repeated with new insights that we might fulfill our calling to be truly Christlike. However this book is not a manual it contains any personal experiences and insights from her life and therefore it is humane and reasonable. Living or at least seeking to live a Christlike life is not for the elite but for all of us. It is simply a matter of the will and motives.

You Will Be Challenged
Everyone is familiar with the question of "What Would Jesus Do?," but few people actually ask, "How would Jesus do?" In Invitation to the Jesus Life, Jan Johnson gives us plenty of food for thought and practical application. Johnson encourages the reader to think about attributes that Jesus had and how we can practice those same disciplines in our own lives. She definitely challenges her audience to step outside their comfort zone.
I enjoyed this book very much. I was pleased that not only did it come with application ideas at the end of each chapter, but there is a group study guide in the back as well as a thorough bibliography. I have lots of other books to look into now. Just don't be mistaken and think this is an easy step by step guide. There is a lot of opportunity for introspection and personal challenge. This is a book I am proud to have on my shelf, although I think it will spend a lot of time in my hands instead.

Jesus was....more than what He did.
"He left you an example so that you could follow in his footsteps." (1 Peter 2:21b GW)
It was the sensation that sparked the little wristbands, the bumper stickers, and even conversations around the water cooler…..WWJD or "What would Jesus do?" It has faded because of two reasons: Everyone already knew the answer and no one could sustain doing what Jesus would do for long. There was no deep, reactionary change from shallow Christianity to a deeper relational understanding and commitment to God through His Son, Jesus Christ that must happen before the question becomes the reaction.
Barbara Johnson feels even knowing that mysterious "WWJD" and doing it is prone to the same failure, because outward obedience is corrupted unless inward transformation of the heart towards "the kind of person from whom good deeds naturally flow" happens. In her theological understanding of 'Christlikeness', Johnson endeavors to look beyond the knowledge of "what" Jesus did to "understanding" seventeen 'underrated and particular' characteristics of Christ so that a 'curriculum of Christlikeness' will lead to a sustainable, transformational change within where what Jesus would do is replaced by doing what Jesus would do.
Johnson offers us a perspective of a "Jesus who was more than what He did" and a different look at the examples He left for us to follow.
