Not What I Expected
In Storm Warriors: A Novel, Jon Nappa Lionel Lukin has it all, a prosperous business, a wife he loves dearly, and a beautiful son. They set sail together on what should have been a simple trip, but it turns disastrous when a storm hits, the ship sunk, and his loved ones are washed out to sea. As Lionel recovers in this seaside village, he watches the same tragedy befall ship after ship. Using his knowledge from his business, he believes there is something he can do to help. His plans meet optimism and scoffing within the village. Will he be successful? Will he be able to build a new life for himself?
This story is loosely based on history, which is normally very appealing to me. I expected to zip right through this book in a few days. Unfortunately, I found there to be a lack of character development and the writing to be dry. I liked the basic story, but the way it was written was not enough to pull me in. I also found the ending to be disappointing. I won't say more about it because I wouldn't want to spoil the story. Lukin's triumph over tragedy may be inspiring, but overall, this book is not.

Be there Storm Warriors out there?
It's been years since I have been so immersed and deeply moved by a novel as I was with Storm Warriors - A brilliantly told story of how the courage and vision of a simple man can change the hearts and lives of a community that at first glance could be perceived as hopeless. Author, Jon Nappa, masterfully tells a story that at some point evoked every emotion I possess. At times I could have wept, while at other times I was amused as I took a journey with a man who found greatness after his darkest hour. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages who long to be inspired.

Finally, good Christian fiction
'm a bitter and cynical reader when it comes to "Christian fiction." I love to read, plain and simple. And I'm a Christian , plain and simple (okay maybe not, but that's for another post somewhere else). The problem is too often so-called Christian fiction, forgoes the fiction in lieu of the Christian and in so doing usually ends up with a lackluster story with a contrived spiritual overtone. Not so with Storm Warriors! Nappa manages to write a gripping account of the invention of the lifeboat that ebbs and flows with great pacing and imagery. The spiritual aspects of the story are very clear yet it is done in a way that feels real and authentic. When was the last time a Christian fiction author brought his main characters repeatedly into a pub for key interactions, and manages to avoid the seemingly required disapproving diatribe of worldly vices? Okay, I'm getting a little gushy, but the authenticity of Storm Warriors, coupled with the dynamic and shifting points of view and the rousing conclusion make this a must read for anyone, Christian or not. When's the movie being made? And who do I call about directing it?
