Great Rules to Live By

Jerry White’s 52 Rules to Live By shows readers how to live more pleasurable, organized and successful lives. The short book consists of 52 chapters grouped into three sections: A Better You, Relationship Rules, and Enhancing Your Work and Effectiveness. While the book covers obvious principles such as organization, communication, and faith, it also addresses some less common ideas. For example, White stresses that people should strive to be both losers and winners. A successful life should strike a balance between the two extremes. White also emphasizes the importance of reading, writing, and even doing some things poorly. 52 Rules to Live By is a great book. These sections can be read straight-through or in a random order. Since the chapters do not have to be read in order, White does repeat himself at times. Several times in the book, White recounts the same stories from his days in the Air Force. He also repeatedly states his love for playing handball, which I found somewhat humorous because it shows how much he truly loves the game. Although the chapters are short and the writing style casual, the lessons are influential and valuable. I will definitely take White’s advice and implement one his techniques into my life each week. I highly recommend this book to others.

It's not rocket science...good rules to live by

Are you looking for a new devotional for yourself or to give as a gift? You will definitely want to check out Jerry White’s “Rules to Live By: 52 Principles for a Better Life”. Mostly, it’s a common sense guide to how to live life—the rules are simple and they work—that’s the author’s guarantee. The book is divided into three sections—A Better You, Relationship Rules and Enhancing Your Work and Effectiveness. You will find guidelines on how to take care of yourself, your emotions and your relationships. You will find tips on how to work more effectively and the benefits of working hard. You can read them in order or skip around to whatever you’re dealing with at the time. You can use as a discussion point in a small group or at the dinner table. It is a perfect gift for a graduate or a grandparent. Don’t forget to read the forward by Ken Blanchard and the introduction. In A Better You, you will learn to think, concentrate, be a winner and a loser. You will learn the value of remembering your past, wasting time and keeping physically fit. In Relationship Rules, you will discover how being real and being available can strengthen your friendships. You will also learn how to make and keep close friends. In the final section, Enhancing Your Work and Effectiveness, the author discusses how to compete but not be competitive and focus on contribution rather than position. There is a time to work hard, but there is also a time to do some things poorly or just leave them undone. Life Priniciples

Jerry White has written 52 Rules to Live By which is best described by its subtitle of Principles for A Better Life. The book is a small book written in 52 chapters, each describing a bit if advice from the author as to living a more positive life. Jerry White has degrees in electrical engineering and astronautics and has served as a president emeritus of The Navigators. He has a wealth of experience in public speaking and discipling others. His book would make a great little gift book for those unforgettable life moments like a job transfer, promotion, birthday, retirement, etc. It can be read in one sitting or in fifty two different short reading segments, such as in daily devotional reading. It is packed full of short segments of wisdom such as the book of Solomon in the Bible. I am not sure it is a book that I would pick off the shelf for myself, but I would be inclined to purchase it as a gift for others. I am always skeptical about a book, other than the Bible, that makes me believe that everything I need to know about life is contained within the book, which is what the title implies. However, it is well-written and would provide a great gift for the holidays. Not Rocket Science

52 Principles For A Better Life Rules TO LIVE BY authored by Dr. Jerry White is a small book just right for encouraging and helping us to become better citizens for heaven. This book is divided into 52 "mini chapters" where the reader is not bogged down with technical words or thoughts but the reader gleans an appreciation for life by reading short-like-mini-devotionals. Sometimes it feels as if one is reading the journal pages of Dr. White. This wonderful read is taken from the former years of Dr. Jerry White. He was in the "military, at NASA, and with The Navigators, Dr. Jerry White shares insights and wisdom to point you toward a more balanced life. His 52 guiding principles do more than just tell you what you should do--they outline the godly life you can have today." In chapter 42, Do Some Things Poorly, caught my attention. Do some things poorly?!? Not what most of us are taught....so I read on. Dr. White isn't saying do a "bad" job. He's telling the reader to not put too much emphasis on doing a perfectionist job and missing out on the importance of getting the job done. To help explain I quote from page 144, "Mary likes a clean house, and Mary's a perfectionist. But she once learned a valuable perspective when her aunt was talking about cleaning the house before guests arrive: 'If they come looking for dust,' she said, 'I don't want to disappoint them!" When you set out to work on a project, decide what level of completeness or perfection is needed or demanded." To me that is great advice. Not just in house cleaning but in life. Thoughts to get us motivated to work on the important parts of life. There's so much GOOD in this book. More than I can write on this page! But I also loved Get Mad At the Right Things, Treat People Well, and Make Love! This is a great-tastic 5 star read! Not rocket science but wonderful words of wisdom and sage advice for those of us who long to live in moderation. This is also a wonderful gift book for those on your Christmas list!

Helpful and Easy to Read

We all have principles that we live by. These principles guide our lives and determine how successful we become in life. Those who are not committed to sharpening their saw (Ecclesiastes 10:10) and becoming more effective in daily living, will only hinder and limit their potential contribution in this world. As a busy pastor with a young family, I am always open to advice in this area. With Jerry White’s new book “Rules To Live By,” I have found just that. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the name Jerry White, he is president emeritus of The Navigators, which is a Christian organization that focuses on discipleship and is based out of Colorado Springs. Dr. White served for many years as a mission controller at Cape Canaveral and in the US Air Force and now is a popular conference speaker. In this short book, Jerry White offers “52 principles for a better life.” It is an easy to read book, but has the potential to greatly enhance a person’s daily living. Just to give you a sampling of some of my favorites: - Learn to think well - Learn to concentrate - Think long term - Let magazines sit for two weeks - Be quiet - Get mad at the right things - Disagree Agreeably - Make and keep close friends - Focus on contribution, not position - Make lists As you can see, this is not rocket science. These are principles that, if practiced, will increase personal effectiveness. Some of the principles are kinda fun, such as: - Be a loser - Waste time - Forget - Make love - Do some things poorly - Leave some things undone - Compete, but don’t be competitive I won’t take the time to explain what Dr. White means by those principles, but you might just want to buy the book for yourself. If I had one criticism for this book, it would be that it is not gospel centered. While Dr. White is a Christian man and certainly none of these principles are contrary to Scriptures, he does not place Jesus Christ at the center of the book. What could be a more important rule to live by than to affirm the lordship of Jesus Christ over every sphere of life? Aside from that, we can all find helpful tidbits to aid our personal effectiveness.

"Perfect Sound Advice, To Quiet Your Noisy World!"

This little book is awesome and action-packed, filled with lots of tid-bits of information and scripture to keep the weary and restless soul afloat in today's everday life and world, for that matter! It is chalked full of wonderful sound advice from one who has been through a lifetime of experiences! The author, Jerry White, touches on three different things in his book "A Better You, Relationship Rules, and Enhancing Your Work and Effectiveness", which are are all areas of our lives that we may need work on. Focusing on these three areas, he has written the book into 52 chapters, but the book is so small that it could be read in a day, or in 52 days, you decide! It could be easily broken down into a study that way. I loved so much of his advice and principles, it is really hard to pick or choose what was the best! He uses his advice to point us towards a more balanced and healthy way of living. I definitly would recommend this book to be the main attraction on any coffee table, or as a gift for a loved one, for Christmas, a birthday, graduation, etc. It is a very nice, attractive hardbound book. It may be small, yet it is perfect sound advice, to quiet your noisy world!
