A heart for people.
I have a heart for people and selected this book based on this and my education in Social Work. I wasn't prepared for the depth of this book, it is a heavy read and does take some time to work through. While it is done in an easy style it can be hard to digest everything in one reading. I would suggest if you are reading this to minister to others that you read through it once and then as each crisis arises then flip to the section you need. It would be impossible to remember all the great and relevant information by reading it only one time.
There are many sections, such as, illness and hospital visitation, crisis, aging, death (within death it includes suicide, SIDS, miscarriage, infertility, violent death, among others), grief, troubled marriages and divorce, addiction (gaming, pornography, chemical addictions, eating, etc), domestic violence, rape, and most important forgiveness. There is also an additional section on resources so that additional books with more information on what is covered in Helping Those Who Hurt can be obtained.
I would say this book would be great for someone who has a total heart for helping those in crisis whether on a full time basis or even just for the friend or family member who wants to help out one another. Anyone within a pastoral setting would also benefit from this, I have seen pastors try to help but sometimes fall short or make a situation worse without realizing it and I think this book can be an effective to learn fast how to deal with crises that happen in people's lives.

Helping Those Who Hurt
Helping Those Who Hurt, written by pastoral counselor Barbara Roberts, is a very helpful guide to quality and Biblical care giving. It is a comprehensive guide for caring in a variety of settings from hospital visits to domestic violence. Roberts provides significant practical tips to pastoral caregivers in nine different areas of care giving as well as ways to identify and understand dynamics in each of those nine areas: illness and hospital visitation, crisis, aging, death, grief, trouble marriage and divorce, addiction, domestic violence, and rape.
Within each topic is a variety of lists describing issues to be aware of and ways of providing care appropriate to the situation. For example, in the chapter on domestic violence, Roberts offers a very helpful checklist to help pastoral caregivers determine if a couple is engaged in verbal abuse or lacks helpful conflict management skills. Such lists are helpful to pastoral caregivers as they make initial contacts and assessments of the situation and issues involved with a particular person or persons.
Of note, is a very helpful and significant concluding chapter on forgiveness as it relates to care giving and spiritual growth. This volume would be a welcome addition to a pastor’s library and for both informal and formal care giving training.

Fantastic Resource for Christian Caregiving!
"Helping Those Who Hurt: A Handbook for Caring and Crisis" is a purse/backpack/satchel-sized treasure trove of practical, biblical information for reaching out in the name of Christ to those in very difficult situations. Barbara Roberts, the author, has more than two decades of experience in crisis ministry and offers readers concise and wise counsel for ministering in a variety of crisis situations, including: hospital visits, death/dying, aging, relationship problems, addiction, and abuse. Potential readers should not let the books small size mislead you--this book is jam-packed with practical information to help you understand what the troubled individuals are going through as well as godly, Christ-centered advice on how to reach out and provide care.
In addition to this immediately helpful information, Ms. Roberts provides over twenty pages of bibliography, organized by topic, to give readers additional resources for study and preparation. With the multitude of books out there on counseling and caregiving, it is hard to overestimate how valuable this listing can be. While not familiar with every book in her list, it appears she has given us a fantastic listing of counseling's "Greatest Hits" from a conservative, Evangelical perspective.
As one who has counseled in hospital, local church, and military chaplaincy settings, this is one book I highly recommend for vocational and lay counselors alike. Even those who would not consider themselves "counselors" could benefit greatly from "Helping Those Who Hurt," using it to prepare themselves to be used of God to provide words of comfort, encouragement, and hope to those in crisis.

Helping Those Who Hurt
This book is exactly what it claims to be...a handbook for caring and crisis. It is literally small enough to fit in my purse and is filled with practical advice to handle every situation a minister could experience. It is a reminder of what to do and what not to do.
It is divided into 10 sections and covers everything from hospital visits, to crisis, to helping rape victims. It is written almost like a checklist, so that in those moments of panic or shock, anyone could pull it out, skim it, and have a starting point for handling the situation.
What I love about this book is that it is clearly written by an expert, but you don't have to be an expert to follow the steps. Regardless of who you are, there is something simple you can do to bring comfort to the situation, whether it is meeting physical needs, encouraging words, or offering Scripture.

Very helpful
As Christians we are called to minister to those who hurt.

I wanted to read this book because it seems whenever someone is going through a crisis I always feel a little awkward. Not knowing what to say or do for that person. Of course, in my heart, I want to help them as much as possible but I just wasn't sure how to do that. Helping those who Hurt by Barbara M. Roberts is a book that helps us serve those who have been hurt and need a loving presence. It has such a wide range of topics. From hospitalization to aging, or addiction to abuse, there is advice for almost every situation. She gives you some general information about each situation. Ideas for what to say to a person going through a crisis, lists of do's and don'ts , resources, and even information written directly to a person who is hurting. I would say this book is a must have for anyone who is wanting to go into pastoral caregiving and a great read for anyone who knows someone who hurts. Everyone!

Help for the helpers!
When I was faced with the daunting task of preparing both my dearest sister in Christ, her family and the congregation for the ending of her earthly journey, it was my first experience as a chaplain and I was woefully unprepared.
There is a wealth of denominational handbooks that speak doctrinal traditions, but there have been no concise, structured handbooks available that make this journey as a layperson, a chaplain, or even a pastor somewhat less daunting….
Barbara Roberts has put the wealth of her experience, tested and tried upon the field of ministry, into such a handbook. Less of a personal story of lessons learned, it is rather a precise and no-nonsense reference guide that anyone facing the call of ministering to those facing life's challenges can quickly read, understand, and then apply the support of the Holy Spirit to so that the expression of God's love can be realized in the midst of the heartaches of this world.
This is a 'must-have' for anyone called to go into the mess of life with the heart of the Savior so that the needs of the ministered can be met with Christ-like love and compassion. Lay-counselors, Chaplains and even Pastoral staff will find this a vital and welcomed help.
