Story Driven Bible Study
I Am His: Experiencing the Comfort of Abba's Love written by Rita J. Platt is an 8 week Bible Study inviting women "to know the comfort of dwelling in the arms of a tender, wise, and powerful Abba Father. The book was sent to me by NavPress for the purpose of review.
The title of the book drew my attention immediately. Unfortunately many women, Christian women, seem to find themselves falling into defining themselves by what they do rather than by who they are in Christ. I was interested in seeing how Ms Platt would address the very important issue of women finding their identity in Christ and not other things.
I was a little disappointed. Much of the "study" is story driven and as "inspirational" as much of them were, it is not the same as a close look at Scripture, which I consider to be true "Bible Study". When God's word was examined, Platt does a good job of helping the reader take a look at what God has to say about He as our Father and we as His beloved children. This is a mistake I am beginning to see in many Bible Studies supposedly geared toward women. Who says women can't handle a good, long, hard look at the Scriptures?

Learning More About the Father
I am His by Rita Platt
I am His, is an 8-week devotional Bible study book to help women get a deeper sense of the Father’s love, comfort and care for them. There were definitely plenty of scripture verses, personal stories, prayers to pray, and little exercises to fulfill that goal.
Quite a few of the suggested things-to-do were completely new ideas for me. I can’t imagine anyone not being able to at least glean a few choice morsels from this comforting book. Even if you think you have a strong healthy relationship with the Father person of the Godhead, who couldn’t use strengthening in that area? I know I can! I intend to go back to this book several times to make sure I put into practice quite a few of the suggestions.
What was just a little bit bothersome to me, was that it was not clearly laid out in an 8 week format. Oh, there were 8 chapters all right, but it was not clearly divided into a day-by-day reading or thing-to-do. The author could definitely improve this book, if she were to clearly spell out what to read and do in a 5 or 7 day- a- week manner.
Even though it was not divided into daily portions, there was way too much information in there to read the book in one setting. To do that, would be to miss much of its richness. At a minimum, you need at least one day per chapter to benefit from it.
A lot of women go through their wholes lives not getting close to the Father. Oh, they are “in” with Jesus, and even at least a little bit familiar with the Holy Spirit, but sometimes we neglect our relationship with the Father portion of the godhead. Since this is true, if you are a women’s Bible study leader, I recommend this book to introduce this sometimes neglected topic of study to your group.

I Am His...A Wonderful Bible Study
Do you ever wonder if God really loves you, even though you know you are forgiven, that He saved you and you will live forever with him? In this 8 week Bible Study, Rita J. Platt explains how we can Experience the Comfort of Abba’s, our Heavenly Father’s love for us. The chapters in this study are: Abba Father; Chosen to Belong; The Father’s Love; In His Arms; Under His Wings; Through Abba’s Eyes; A Generous Father; and A Daughter’s Inheritance.
I chose this book because it was a study of how much God loves us. When going through difficult time, and at other times for no apparent reason, I wonder if God really loves me like the Bible says. It sounds really ungrateful, but these feelings happen to so many people. I was in awe reading and studying through this book as the author gives scripture after scripture, as well as phrases, sentences, and statements concerning Gods real love for His children. I really enjoyed Rita Platt’s study, and you can feel her heart in what she is teaching.
Some of the things that really jumped out at me are:
1. You are in Christ. You are a daughter of the King. You are crowned with beauty, adorned with praise, and a new creation displaying the amazing love of your Father.
2. When Abba looks at you. He sees one who is in Christ. He sees potential, uniqueness, treasure, and beauty. His eyes glow with tenderness and love as He fixes His gaze on you.
3. Ask your Abba Father to be present with you in the midst of each situation, to hold you, and to help you receive His compassion and Comfort.
4. Our Father knows our deepest need and the fragile nature of our spirits. Regardless of our source of distress, we are restored as we flee to the quiet strength of His loving arms.
5. What are some new names your Abba Father might have for you? Picture yourself becoming a person who reflects your new name. What might that look like in your daily life?
And this is just a tip of the iceberg ladies, just enough to peak your interest. If you have a Sunday School class or a small or even large ladies study group; this would be an awesome study for you. Regardless of how we feel about God’s love, we can all learn so much from this study. We can never study enough about our Abba Father’s love for each of us.
I want to thank NavPress for providing me a copy of this book to read and review. The review and opinions are mine only. I was not requested or expected to write a positive review of this Bible Study. I wrote what I felt from my heart.

A Loving & Tender Bible Study
I Am His is advertised as "An 8-Week Bible Study for Today's Woman" and "Experiencing the Comfort of Abba's Love." I was hesitant as I began this study. However, after the first chapter, I was hooked. Rita J. Platt has such a tender way of pulling you close to her and helping you feel the love of our Redeemer. I appreciate her sincerity and humbleness that comes forth from the pages of her book. I believe that many women would choose to complete this study in less than 8 weeks. It is certainly very do-able. However, it is also perfect for very busy women who want to study the word, but struggle to find the time to do so. I am going to go through this study again to keep myself reminded of Abba's personal love for me.
I received this complimentary book from NavPress and have not been paid for this review.

I Am His
I Am His by Rita Platt is written to help women understand God as their father. This relationship can be difficult for some women to comprehend and Mrs. Platt has done an excellent job covering several of the important aspects of this relationship in her study. She uses a lots of relevant contemporary illustrations to help clarify her points and shares stories of different women that she has encountered. Each chapter contains three sections: Ponder Scripture, Reflect and Respond.
The study is written to cover 8-weeks. I don't think there is quite enough material in the study for a whole weeks worth of study. Perhaps at a rather slow pace or for people who are VERY reflective it would be enough but I thought I would spend about one day on each of the weeks. Some of them are longer and more in depth but several of the weeks are very brief.
I would have liked more of the study to be about getting women into God's word. As the study progresses, more time is spent in the biblical text. Week 6 in particular picks up the pace quite a bit and I enjoyed that one especially. But, I would have liked there to be more focus on the text overall.
The topic of this study will be very helpful for women who want to learn more about God as Father. It is a great overview and provides a good introduction to the main concepts of our Father God.

"Short Study, Lots to Be Gained!"
“I Am His”
By: Rita J. Platt
If you read the book “I am His, by Rita J. Platt, you will find yourself, “experiencing the comfort of Abba’s Love.” This book is an 8 week Bible study for “today’s woman”. The writer tries to teach the reader that no matter what our experiences were with our “earthly” father’s, we can learn to find love and comfort, in the ever-loving arms of “Abba Father”, our Heavenly Father. She shows us through her personal stories, scripture, and reflection, that the joy and wonder of living as children of God, is right there within our reach, and it always has been! The author reveals throughout her studies, that one may have been failed by their earthly father, but our Heavenly Father, “Abba”, will never fail us! As stated before, the book is broken down into an 8 week course, but it really can be read straight through on an individual basis, or it even can be read skipping around, and not necessarily in order. I don’t feel that the book must be read as a group, and much can be learned either way. It is a nice short study, with lots of information to be gained!

A great Bible Study for women!
This is a Bible Study for women about understanding how deep God’s love is for them. It is set up so that it can be studied and meditated on for 8 weeks. There are suggested prayers to pray throughout the Bible Study that help to continually open up the Scriptures to the readers.
This Bible Study opened my mind up more to the fact that God showers his daughters with love and gifts and that we don’t need to feel guilty when He gives them to us, as if we don’t deserve them. I now have a deeper understanding of the Father’s irreplaceable love for me.
This Bible Study seems like it would work well in groups or for personal study. It came across to me as a non-denominational Bible Study so it should be able to be used in congregational groups that use both the Old and New Testaments.
I believe this book can benefit any woman who reads it…from women who have good relationships with their fathers to women who don’t know their fathers at all. This book has given me the understanding that our Heavenly Father is the only perfect parent that we can have and that our human parents will never be able to love us perfectly like He does.

Wonderful!
Experiencing the Comfort of Abba's Love I AM HIS by Rita J. Platt is an eight-week devotional journal that focuses on the comforting and powerful Abba Father~God our Father.
Each week is divided into five parts: an introductory illustration, pondering related Scripture verses, reflection, and response.
This is an easy to read devotional that helped to see God as a loving Creator who longs to be a part of each child's life. He longs to be our Abba Father. To help me understand the 'Abba Father' I include this definition of Abba Father from a pastor: "This phrase refers to an oriental custom of Bible days, regarding the adoption of a child. Until the adopting papers were signed and sealed by the adopting father, the child saw this man only as a father. He had no right to call him Abba, meaning "my. Yet, as soon as the papers were signed, registered and sealed, the child's tutor presented him to the adopting father--and for the first time the child could say, "Abba, Father!" As the father embraced him, the young one cried, "My father! He's not just a father anymore. He's mine!"
As I pondered the definition and read this book I, too, had a more concrete view of a loving Daddy who loves and comforts me!
Of all the devotionals I enjoyed Week 3 the most. Week 3 is entitled: The Father's Love. this devotional has a place to write contrasts of What Love Does and What Love Does Not....it helps the reader to view the Love of the Father in his own life. Using I Corinthians 13:4-8, the author leads through loving actions of LOVE.
This is a great study for those who long to become closer to God. Also, for those who may have a "bad" view of their earthly father...this devotional will give you a loving view of God the Father.

God as Abba, Your Father
The book is written as an 8 week Bible Study, but I must admit, I did not take the eight weeks to complete the study. I read through each section in different intervals taking the time to absorb the scriptures and ponder the questions presented. I thought this was a wonderful study for women and no matter where you are at in your spiritual journey, I believe that this study can strength your relationship with God as your father. "Abba" is a fairly new word for me. I was aware of it before this book but only in recent readings in the last year or so. The sound of the word itself is so comforting and to think that we can have a close and personal relationship with God, is overwhelming to my mind at times. I am always looking for ways to improve this relationship and this study is one way that can do just that.

An Initmate Journey to Experiencing the Fathering of God, Our Abba
Having just finished a profound book probing the identity and works of Jesus and the presence and indwelling of the Holy Spirit, it was refreshing to pick up this simple study that focuses on the third person of the Trinity – the Father. In I am His: Experiencing the Comfort of Abba’s Love, Rita J. Platt guides us through an eight-week devotional journal on our relationship to God as our comforting yet powerful Abba Father. Each week is divided into five parts: an introductory illustration, pondering related Scripture verses, reflection, and response.
The author explains that even though our view of our earthly fathers impacts how we may think of our Heavenly Father, we can expand beyond the tangible examples in our lives to understand what a perfect Father is like, only found in God – our Abba. He is more than all the strengths of our earthly fathers and has none of the weaknesses.
This book is easy to read, personable, and is easily studied in possibly four weeks instead of eight, even if you reflect on and respond to every exercise she recommends for application, worship and prayer. It helped me to think of God as my personal Abba, Father, in a concrete way when I meet with Him. However, for me, this book lacked theological depth and pulls Scripture verses from all over the Bible to match the topic, not a practice that I favor.
I recommend this book especially for those who have a hard time thinking of God as Father, particularly because their earthly fathers were absent, disappointing, or abusive in some manner. For those, like me, who think fondly of their earthly fathers who sought to follow hard after God, this book is still a good tool to opening ourselves to the fathering of God as Abba/Daddy.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NavPress Publishers in exchange for a book review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
