decent substitute if you can't go away on retreat
Learning to Hear God, by Jan Johnson, is a personal retreat guide designed to teach retreatants to 1) cultivate quietness, 2) listen to God and the tone of his divine voice, and 3) hear God in the Word. The book format is a loose approximation of the lectio divina style of prayer.
This is an interesting book to review because, while I don't feel I made great progress toward the three stated purposes, I do feel my time with the book was well spent.
First off, spiritual reading in the form of a personal retreat forces the reader to make time for God. Retreat chapters cannot be read in my usual "5 minutes here, 10 minutes there, until I eventually finish the chapter" reading style. I found it challenging, but extremely rewarding to arrange my schedule such that I had one full hour to "retreat" each week. (I actually ended up needing only 40-45 minutes for each unit, but had blocked a full hour for each. Having those remaining minutes to enjoy a coffee in silence was an added bonus!)
The other great plus of this book: each chapter sent me back into the world with one great new challenge or focus for the week. You may remember the firing of the prayer committee members that I wrote about here. And I also hope to share about God's "unusual speech" soon. Having a take-away concept to ponder each week was a highlight of my Learning to Hear God experience.
So, while I didn't make great gains towards the author's stated goals, nor have I ever particularly enjoyed the lectio divina format, I always found myself looking forward to the next chapter in the days between sessions. And I know I will continue to reflect on the concepts I encountered here. This personal retreat was certainly a positive experience.

Refreshing guide to personal retreats
This is a refreshing little book for those who are interested in learning how to spend time with the LORD beyond just doing "personal devotions." This book is a great introduction into how to spend an afternoon or a day with the LORD. Each chapter is designed to point you to the Word, help you study and meditate on the Word, pray, and listen to the still small voice of God. Our world is filled with distractions, and this book is a great introduction in how to get away from those distractions in order simply sit before the LORD ready to hear. Personal retreats are foreign to many Christians in our busy culture. Johnson opens her book with the "how and why" behind taking personal retreats. The subsequent chapters are exercises to help you look to Christ and hear from Him during your retreat. As you move through the passages of Scripture in each chapter, Johnson asks questions to help the reader interact with the text. These questions are thought provoking, and a great tool in learning how to meditate on a passage, which in turn leads us to be like those who walk away from the Word remembering and clinging to what we've learned. For those who are interested in personal retreats (read here or here for more thoughts on this topic), this is a great resource.

Great personal study
Jan Johnson's personal retreat guide titled, "Learning to Hear God," is a great resource for individuals seeking to really hear God in one's life. This book begins with an introductory chapter to help the reader choose a space and time to do this study. Then there are 7 conversations or chapters for study. Each chapter is divided into sections making the study very easy to follow and understand. Bible verses and stories are used and there are questions for the reader to answer and think about as well as suggestions to help the principles be applied and used in the readers lives. I found this study to be worthwhile and enjoyable! Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program.
