Very Good Retreat Study on Psalm 23

This book is designed for a ladies retreat study with seven sessions taking you through Psalm 23. In this study, you don’t just read the verses and read a little bit about each verse, you read, and re-read over and over again. After you read the verses, you meditate on what you have read, you immerse yourself into Gods message to you. You read and understand the meaning of the words, the theme of the scriptures you read, and you picture the passage you have read. Then you respond to God’s message to you and you rest in the message God has given you. Throughout each lesson there are lots of questions to answer which I love, because I seem to understand so much more when there are questions about what I’ve read to answer. I thoroughly enjoyed this study, though I didn’t do the study in a retreat setting, I studied through the book on my own. This is one great thing about this book. It can be used many ways, not just the retreat setting it was designed for. The author so wonderfully designed this book breaking down each chapter and each section in the chapters to make the study more profitable to those using it. She did the planning work for us, we just need the book, along with our Bibles and start studying. This book is a valuable resource for any library as well. I encourage ladies to seriously check out this book for themselves, and request it for your next Bible study. I received this book free from NavPress to read and review. Another great personal retreat guide by Jan Johnson

Jan Johnson has authored more than a thousand Bible Studies. She is a sought-after spiritual director and retreat leader. I’ve never attended Johnson’s retreats in person, but her spiritual retreat guides are excellent resources to a personal retreats. In April, I reviewed “Living in the Companionship of God” which is designed to instill a passion and desire for a personal relationship with God. Using the same format, “Trusting God for Everything: Psalm 23” challenges you to live each day in relationship with God by putting aside your worry and fear for the future and rely completely and totally upon Him. Only until you begin resting and trusting in God will you ever into a life of confidence in God’s provision and restoration. This book is particularly important and relevant for the days we live in when people are concerned about the economy, healthcare, employment and personal relationships. Take some time and get alone with God. Refresh, renew and revive into a fresh, new relationship with your heavenly Father. You can trust God with everything in your life. Book Teaches Reader to Slow Down

I would say the book is a set of easy-to-follow meditation sessions on Psalm 23 that forces the reader to slow down. Speed readers beware! The author leads you through exploring 7 characteristics of the Shepherd revealed in the psalm, teaching the reader to use different passage translations to glean new insight and to spend time conversing with God throughout. Overall, there are lasting insightful takeaways though the lessons do become slightly formulaic. The Introduction is helpful in understanding why the author does repeat some portions of each sessions, so it is beneficial to take time to read through it. Teachability: 5 out of 5 (lessons are already outlined with questions. The book will lead a discussion on its own without prep work) Readability: 5 out of 5 (no long paragraphs or difficult concepts. Though with some portions that are repeated, I did gloss through by the 4th look) Personal impact: 3 out of 5 (definitely some lasting thoughts that are still changing how I see my Shepherd) Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Trusting God in Everything

In Trusting God for Everything: Psalm 23, Jan Johnson helps the reader focus on the text of Psalm 23 and guides the reader to apply this section of scripture to their life. The book is formatted in such a way that it could be used as a retreat guide or for personal Bible study. Each chapter contains four sections: Opening to God's Message, Immersed in God's Message, Responding to God's Message and Resting in God's Message. The chapters are rather repetitive with similar questions in each section. Overall, I found the book to be very repetitive. This is likely intentional as the focus of the book is on meditating on God's word. Though this is the case, I would have appreciated a little variety. There are some helpful exercises in the book but I would want to supplement this if I was to use it for personal study or for others. There are several commentaries I would recommend for a more in-depth study of Psalm 23. Mrs. Johnson uses A. A. Anderson, which is a fine resource, but I would more highly recommend Kidner and Craigie. All in all, this is a fine resource for bible study and reflection. I think there may be better options available but for some people this could be a good starting point in their study of Psalm 23. A valuable study for each of us

This book by Jan Johnson is just a small looking book, fewer than one hundred pages, but it is a valuable Bible study tool, a tool to help one draw near to God. It is written as a “personal retreat guide”, intended to be used in a time of concentrated time alone with the Lord. At first the idea of retreat threw me off, as I didn’t see how it would be feasible for me to have that much “alone” time, as the book is intended for. However, as I continued through the book, I realized that it was a lovely Bible study which I can use in my own devotional time with the Lord. Don’t let that retreat terminology stop you from using this book. The seven chapters, or Meditations, take the reader through the 23rd Psalm, one which many of us are have know since childhood. The author uses several different methods to take us out of that mindset of “I’m so familiar with this, there can’t possibly be anything I can learn from it!” and into a spot where it can affect our lives. She uses different methods such as guided imagery, changing the phrase order, personalizing the verses, etc. to allow us to look at these passages in a different way, to allow God to speak to us through this chapter. I would certainly recommend this book. It will give you a better understanding of God’s loving care for each of His children. Trusting God for Everything: Psalm 23 by 'Jan Johnson' - Book Review

“Trusting God for Everything: Psalm 23”” by ‘Jan Johnson’ from NavPress is a remarkable personal retreat guide. It delves into Psalm 23 for our meditation and soul nurturing rest. Jan helps us to experience solitude and play at a slower rhythm in order to allow God more space to interact with us. The retreat guide aims at assisting the readers to see how God provides for everything we need and as we meditate upon the promises of Psalm 23 while reading this guide, we can enter in a life of trust and confidence in God. This book is written in an illuminating style leading to our spiritual meditation and it talks about issues like:  Does God Really Provide Everything I Need?  Trusting God for Soul Restoration  Trusting God to Lead  Trusting God in the Deep Valleys  Trusting that God is with Me  Trusting God with Those Who Oppose Me  A Life of Settled Trust in God Each meditative topic deals about a particular verse from Psalm 23 in a vivid manner. For example, a shepherd is described as a protector of sheep, provider of food and clean water, doctor, disciplinarian, rescuer, companion and delighted manger. The exhaustive explanation of one Psalm 23 verse under each chapter of meditation is a great take away from this book. This book will a good resource to anyone who wants to build a relationship (involving regular personal interaction, ongoing connection and shared life experiences) with God and anyone who wants to experience more deeply what it means to have life ‘in God’ or ‘in Christ’, Jan Johnson enjoys speaking at retreats and conferences, hoping to ignite within listeners a burning desire to know God in an authentic way and to live out a kingdom life in the daily companionship of Jesus. She is also a speaker, teacher and spiritual director. She writes primarily about spiritual formation topics. She has written nineteen books and more than a thousand magazine articles and Bible studies. I would give this one four out of five stars. Please note that I received this book from NavPress Publishers through its book review bloggers program in exchange for an honest review. Also be informed that the opinions I have expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

A Spiritually Meaningful Experience

When I travel on vacation, I seek a break from my usual routines with hopes of blending adventure and relaxation. During my last few annual vacations, I started to pursue this even in my daily time with God after an abrupt realization that God doesn't go on His own vacation when I do. I yearn for some different and fresh way to connect with Him, either through a particular topic or a select book in the Bible for my focus. This is the perfect book for my next vacation! Jan Johnson's Trusting God for Everything: Psalm 23 nurtured my soul as she guided me through study and meditation of a very familiar passage that delivered me to new heights. This book includes seven meditations focusing on connecting with God by trusting Him for everything you need, for soul restoration, in His leadership, in the Deep Valleys, during opposition, and in His continual companionship. Each meditation begins with settling into a peaceful place with opening thoughts, then immersion in the Word, response with thought-provoking questions, reflection, and prayer. Warning: this is not your typical Bible study book. It's a tool for interacting with God through Scripture. While the author provides suggestions on how to have an effective retreat time, this book can also be useful for stay-cations and Saturday mornings if you find that you just can't get away, so long as you can get yourself alone to really commune with God. I used this book for Saturdays and holidays for the purpose of this review and rushed through it faster than I would've liked, so I plan to take it with my on my next vacation. Still, I will never read or recite Psalm 23 the same way ever again, and my trust in God has expanded. Trusting God for Everything: Psalm 23 - A Buffet For Your Hungry Soul

Trusting God for Everything: Psalm 23 was subtitled "A Personal Retreat Guide." I was quite excited to realize this book would be a guide for getting time alone with God to grow in my faith. Finding tools to slow down and allow God to quiet my mind are important to me as learning these concepts allows me to help not only myself but many other women as well. There were several areas of the guide I found concerning. I noticed a few references with a New Age undertone. One was to imagine God speaking to me and what color would I imagine during that interaction? I liken that visualization exercise with the New Age concept of Chakra. Imagining a conversation with God and having to visualize a color is not a biblical concept. God does not need anything added unto Himself as He is the epitomy of color. Also, I was to imagine an empty chair next to me and God sitting in it. I remember that exercise from my "embrace your inner child" days before I came to Christ (I was a sold out hard core New Ager). And yes, the chair exercise was a New Age concept and still is today. This book is marketed to "Christians" however in order for any person to commune with God, one must be "born again" (John 3:7). I was disappointed an Invitation to Salvation (Romans 10:9-11) was absent. Having the invitation or explanation of being born again provides essential clarification to the reader how to have a personal relationship with Christ. I say this because I was a 'Christian" all my life and talked to God, but it was not until I understood what the Bible had to say that I realized God did not hear my prayers until I became His child through Romans 10:9-11. John 9:3 (I do not review books from a religious standard). Without separating the sheeps from the goats, the question then is, 'Who are you talking to? God or the enemy of your soul?" Being a Berean, I not only read the back cover of the book but the About the Author section. I saw the reference to Ms. Johnson having a DMin in Ignatian spirituality and spiritual formation not on the back cover but inside the book. I learned she writes primarily about spiritual formation topics. I googled Ignation spirituality [...]. Had I only read the back cover I would have missed this important element of Ms. Johnson's theology. Overall, I would recommend this guide to be used as a tool. I would treat it merely as a walk through a buffet line, taking just those best and useful tasty morsels that would benefit me, my soul and my walk with God. On the other hand, The Bible in its entirety I would eat as a nine course meal and more. All of Psalm 23 is a confidence psalm as the author shared. Spend each day in Psalm 23 and you will enjoy white glove table service for the rest of your life. You will be so satiated you will want to share your bounty with all who pass by your table.

reflective and interesting

There are two points to immediately make about this book, one is that it is a study guide and the second is that it invites interaction with what the author phrases as ‘questions you had not thought of’, thinking in new ways and identifying issues at hand. Psalm 23 is a familiar psalm, but for some it has become over-familiar and this study guide reconsiders that familiarity, not by over-analysing phrases and portions, but by pausing and looking at the context in which the praise is written and the sentiments expressed. This is not an in-depth study of Psalm 23, but it is heartening to have the reader pointed to books on the Shepherd Psalm, which are able to devote a more considered exposition. This is an uplifting book and will be of benefit to those setting out to explore the 23rd Psalm anew. It is set out as a resource to use at a retreat but readers may choose to use it for personal devotions. I am a bit uneasy about the different Bible versions referred to throughout as I commonly use the KJV, but this takes nothing away from enjoying the way that the author has set out helpful themes for meditation, embraced a wonderful overarching theme of ‘trust’ in sections such as Trusting God to Lead and Trusting that God is with Me and formatted the sections of the book well to encourage active use. It is a book that groups will enjoy, participants will write in and reinvigorate their interest in the Psalms. Retreat Guide

This is the third book in a personal retreat series by this author. I have previously read and reviewed the other two books in the series. The book begins with guidelines for making a personal retreat and how to get the most out of your retreat. This book is based upon Psalm 23 which is referred to as a "confidence psalm." The author breaks down Psalm 23 into sections and asks readers to meditate on various aspects of the the psalm and what those areas mean to their lives. Jan Johnson writes wonderful retreat guides that would be very beneficial to a Christian wanting to complete a personal retreat. She focuses on building a personal relationship with God and ways to build your trust and confidence in God through a retreat. I enjoyed this book as much as the other two and I do recommend this to other Christians. If you are unable to take time out for a retreat, then this book could be read and studied at home in a quiet place without interruptions, breaking it down into smaller segments of time. You won't regret taking the time to read this book as well as the other two in the series, entitled "Living in the Companionship of God" and "Learning to Hear God."

Great Retreat Guide!

This is a retreat guide focusing on Psalm 23. It is designed to open up Psalm 23 by reading, praying, and meditating on the Psalm with a group attending a retreat or individually at a personal retreat location. There are suggested prayers that are given throughout the guide that help open up the chapter, there are also questions included with each meditation to help reflect on what was learned. My main retreat location where I read this retreat guide was my front porch where it was quiet and calm. I entered into a deeper connection about Psalm 23 and some of the verses took on a new meaning for me. Instead of words on paper the verses came alive and I could paint pictures in my mind of what I thought God was trying to teach me about them. I liked the prayers that were included with this retreat guide and I can already see God making changes in my life after I prayed them. I can imagine people at youth and adult retreats sitting in groups reflecting on the meditation questions in this retreat guide during times of Bible study that have been created into the retreat schedules. I can also imagine people individually reading this retreat guide by themselves in peaceful places.
