Edifying and Uplifting
"Live Like You Mean It" is T.J. Addington's challenge to readers to live intentionally and with purpose. He calls the reader to figure out his or her "personal wiring", and to act on that introspection and use the gifts and talents God has given us to encourage others and to live out God's purposes for our lives.
Each chapter ends with group discussion questions which can also be used by an individual reader, for the purposes of personal Bible study and reflection. The questions were very specific and applicable, and were actually my favorite aspect of the book. The questions are phrased in such a way that really inspires the reader to really do some serious reflecting in order to come to an answer.
The author's tone is friendly and compassionate. The book is well-organized, and a very easy read. It prompts the reader to think deeply about the important questions in life, but has a very positive and uplifting tone, and isn't so intense that it becomes emotionally burdensome or stressful. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about God's plan for his or her life.
Please note I received this book free of charge from NavPress, as part of their blogger reviewer program, in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review.

Practical, Personal, and Pastoral
Three words describe my thoughts about this book: 'Practical, Personal, and Pastoral.' Addington, a survivor of a serious illness, writes this book in a very introspective manner. Having struggled through multiple medical treatments in hospital from Dec 2007 to January 2008, there is a sense of urgency in him, to share what is most important not just for him, but for people in general. (read more on his medical journey here) This is made real not via answers but questions. Through 10 penetrating life questions, Addington guides the reader to consider putting one's life into perspective, and to practically make it count. The purpose is to help the reader 'who desires to understand his or her life in a new way' (14).
The 10 questions are worded in very PRACTICAL ways. Each points to an objective. For example, the first questions focuses one on the pinpointing the purpose in life. The second makes one recognize how one is 'wired.' The third urges the reader to leave a legacy, and so on.
Somewhere through the middle of the book, Addington becomes more PERSONAL, with deeper sharing about his illness and his hospitalization period of ups and downs. He talks about recognizing our most valuable resources (66-7). He probes the need for relationships (82). He makes a strong case for relationship with God, to be 'recharged' (chapter 6). He encourages us to grow in community by becoming a 'ripple for Christ' (chapter 7). He even shares about his personal letdown after a frustrating 3-year role as a pastor in a church. Despite his apparent short-lived stint as a minister, he remains very much pastoral at heart.
Addington brings this PASTORAL heart into the book as well. This is most evident in the way he approaches the tough matters of life. Addington relates the tragic story of Zach, and how the parents Shawn and Sally responded. Writes the author:
"The question is not whether we will suffer but how we will respond to it when it happens. A proper view of suffering requires a proper view of God and His work in our lives." (145)
Chapter 9 may very well be worth the price of this book. Addington challenges the reader not with scholastic references, or statistical numbers. This book deserves to be on the bookshelf of 'life guides.' The practical tips in the book gives the reader a ready-made reference to guide the reader to plan his own life more intentionally. The personal sharing gives the book a strong flavour of authenticity. The pastoral stance provides a comforting touch to the needs of a world of ups and downs. Praise God for people like T J Addington. I look forward to his next book.

Live Like You Mean It
Subtitle - The 10 crucial questions that will help you clarify your purpose, live intentionally, and make the most of the rest of your life. Discover your "sweet spot" in God's kingdom. Foreword by John Ortberg. This book contains 10 chapters that tackle 10 important questions that we should all be asking ourselves such as, Why am I here? What really matters? and Will I say yes to God? Each chapter concludes with a prayer, and group discussion questions. The author is the international ministry leader of the Evangelical Free Church of America.
He mentions a life-threatening illness as one of the things that made him reflect on the influence he was having on others and his life in general.
I enjoy any book that asks good questions, and this one was no exception. It is filled with scripture references and explanations, and will help you to clarify your role in God's kingdom. The author uses personal illustrations from his own life, including a near death experience and people that have influenced his thinking, to help him think more clearly about the purpose of his life. Some may see this book as "Purpose Driven Life" part two, but this author takes a different approach and is well worth the time to read. I was provided a copy of this book by Navpress for no charge in order to review.

In his book, Live Like You Mean It, T.J. Addington challenges his readers to examine our lives and prioritize what truly matters. In order for us to have meaningful lives, we must live out what God has planned for us. To guide us on this journey, Addington instructs his readers to reflect on the following ten questions:
1. Why am I here?
2. What is my sweet spot?
3. What will I live behind?
4. What really matters?
5. What is my plan?
6. How do I best recharge?
7. How can my life have a ripple effect?
8. How do I relate to God?
9. Will I say yes to God?
10. What shall I do next?
Each of the questions is dealt with in its own chapter, in which Addington provides his personal answer. He gives practical advice that leads to a fulfilling life. It is nearly impossible to finish this book and not be affected by its message in some way. Addington touches on so many topics, including marriage, employment, education, the loss of a loved one and time-management, that each reader is bound to identify with some aspect of the book.

Live Like You Mean It Book Review
The title of this book caught my attention to read and now providing my personal book review of 'Live Like You Mean It.' Today we live as others want us to live and we get caught up in that life and feel there is no escape. There is, however, if you remind yourself you are unique and there is no one else like you. God made us to be individuals and we must praise Him for all that he does for us. 'Live Like You Mean It' provides 10 crucial questions that will help you in clarify your purpose, live intentionally and make the most of the rest of your life. I related to T. J. Addington’s near death, as I was near death six years ago with bacterial infection. Unlike Addington who already gave his heart to the Lord, I began mine again. As I read the book, it renewed me my life wiring God had planned for me. It opened my thoughts of what my purpose is, will, and should be. The fact that he refers to scripture was very educational. I personally like to write notes in my Bible and when I come across books, like this one, it influences me to jot down reminders. At the end of each chapter he gives a bottom line summary, as well as a prayer. Awesome is all I can say. There is a study guide with each chapter, which helps you to reflect on what you read and understand your life and purpose in this life. Small Bible study groups would benefit from this book, as other individuals like myself. Whether you are a born again Christian or not, this is a good book to read and reference, as well as staying renewed with the wiring God has for you. Spread the word of the 'Good News' today, be a follower, and continue the journey of Jesus Christ. As long as I am breathing, there is still more work to do for heavenly Father. I was not disappointed in the reading of this book and would recommend the book highly. I suggest reading this book casually, as it can be a fast read, but it needs to be absorbed. Addington has written this book very easy to understand. If you truly want to live like you mean it, get this book. On the back jacket cover, this book will show you how to respond to your God-inspired inner urgings, to discover that sweet spot of our personal wiring, and live them out intentionally. A Good Beginning for Discovering Your God Given Purpose
Live Like You Mean It by T.J. Addington is based around 10 questions designed to help you take the pieces of your life and create a beautiful picture serving God and doing the works that He has prepared in advance for you to do (Eph 2:10). These 10 questions dig into your purpose, priorities, legacy, personal growth, recreation, influence, and response to God. The final chapter of the book wraps up by asking "What shall I do next?" and provides several useful guides for planning your life according to the insights you have discovered from the rest of the book.
The Pros: This is a hard hitting book, that can change your life if you take the time to actually answer the questions presented. In this busy culture, we need influences that will force us to stop and think, and will challenge us to evaluate and grow. This book can do that if you let it.
The Cons: The first 7 chapters of this book are written like you average self help book with a slightly Christian bent. It could easily be read as an "It's all about me" message (my focus, my purpose, my wiring). In chapters 8 and 9, the tone of the book changes dramatically as it touches the topics of faith in Christ and obedience to God. The first half of the book left me feeling dissastisfied and asking "But what about God?" The quick change left me feeling disconnected, like I had started another book rather than finishing up the one I was already reading.
This is not a "bathtub book." It is not a quick read. When you read Live Like You Mean It, be prepared with a pen and notebook on hand. You might want to have tissues nearby as well. Half way through the book, I was frustrated, anxious, and restless as I took a hard look at my life and was dissatisfied with what I saw. This book is a starting place for Christians to examine their purpose and understand that God has created you as you are with a purpose in mind. It needs to be balanced with a relationship with God and digging into the Bible.

Live Like You Mean It by T.J. Addington ~ Book Review
Live Like You Mean It by T.J. Addington was birthed from hard times and two close calls with death. The author , by asking ten crucial questions, guides the reader to finding God’s purpose for their life. Each chapter concludes with discussion questions which makes this book perfect for a small group, Sunday School class, Bible study, a book club, or as a gift for one about to graduate. Through many illustrations, T.J. Addington shares his wisdom and brings clarity to the question, “What does God want me to do with my life?”
He encourages the reader to write goals, focus on that which really matters, and shows how our lives can have a ripple effect. “No matter how God wired you or how He gifted you, His strategy for bringing bits of heaven to earth is very simple. He has placed each of us in a sphere of influence that is unique to us, and He’s given us opportunities others don’t have. It may be your neighborhood, place of employment, social circle, or any number of unique circumstances. God’s desire is for each of us to use our resources and talents to send ripples of His love moving outward.” ~ T. J. Addington

Live Like You Mean It
Never has a book title so well summed up its contents! This is a typical ten-point book designed to help you re-engineer your life. It's written in a compelling manner and is very logical as you read through it. The guidance is practical, biblical, and very easy to understand - I find it hard to imagine someone struggling to read through this.
This book is aimed almost exclusively at those desiring the American Dream. I'm not that big a fan of the American Dream, so I wasn't that big a fan of this book until about halfway through, where Addington pulls off the perfect bait 'n' switch and starts chucking real Bible truth at you.
That's my biggest compliment, yet my biggest concern about this book. If I had read only the first half I'd have a different opinion of it, and if a reader only reads the first half I think there's a danger they could walk away thinking that the American Dream is a good one to have. That being said, I love so much that Addington pulls you in only to then say, 'think you're getting the hang of how to plan your life? Good. Now realise it's not actually yours, it belongs to Jesus.'
I'd thoroughly recommend this book to someone who liked to dabble a bit in the prosperity gospel, cessationists, and more liberal Christianity. If you're more evangelically-minded, the more practical application here may be useful but I doubt the content will be massively different to a Sunday sermon.
