Conversations with God
Take time to read through this book. Meditate on what you're reading. Listen to what God is saying to you.
Each chapter opens with a bible verse. Then the author goes on to describe a specific situation that occurred in her life, and relates it back to a bible teaching. This allows the reader a moment to dwell on a similar situation in her own life and reflect on how she handled it. Each chapter has a section called “Listening to the Most High” in which the reader is asked to read specific verses and answer a question. Next the reader is directed to answer another question or two on “Experiencing His power and presence”. This question allows the reader to consider what issues in her life are keeping her focus on God.
This devotional is meant to be read over a month's time. However, if a particular chapter takes longer than one day to meditate on and learn from, then the reader should hold off starting a new one. This allows her to receive the full benefit of the teachings within the chapter.
I enjoyed reading this devotional. Honestly, I'm not sure that I've been able to keep focused on the same devotional for an entire month, though. That's a personal challenge that others may not experience.

Though Provoking
Dwelling in His Presence: 30 Days of Intimacy with God is another fantastic book/tool by Cynthia Heald. She uses the familiar format, beginning with a conversation between Father and child. From there, each chapter has a Scripture, a reading, a few questions, a quote, and a prayer. The questions are mostly reflective, prompting the reader to examine her mind and heart. This is not one of her more in depth studies, but an excellent book to direct your thoughts to the Lord. The reading does not take too long, but will stay with you through your day.
While I do highly recommend this book, I will caution you that most of this content was previously published in In the Secret Place of the Most High. You may want to go check your bookshelf before ordering this. I really like the pretty hardcover that comes without the fuss of a dust cover. This would also make a wonderful gift.

A great devotional for busy women
Since I've started reviewing books for NavPress, Cynthia Heald has quickly become one of my absolute favorite authors. So I was thrilled when I saw that she had a new devotional book out, Dwelling in His Presence. This is a wonderful 30-day devotional book that is designed to help us all grow closer to God.
As Cynthia explains in the book's preface, this book explores 30 phrases spoken directly by either God the Father or Jesus. She picked many scriptures and phrases that have played key roles in my life, so I really felt that this book was speaking directly to me.
The devotions are nicely laid out. First there's a short story or discussion from Cynthia, followed by a prompting to think about the scripture that the devotion is based on, and write about what it means to you. This is followed by a question that explores this idea more and then some ideas for individual prayer. After that there's a nice quote from a Christian author on the theme and a few words of prayer to close.
As much as I wish I had more time for devotions and Bible study, the truth is that I'm a crazy-busy mom of two little kids. So I love devotional books that get right to the heart of matters, that point me to the Scriptures and to prayer. Cynthia Heald is truly gifted at finding the truth in a Bible verse and explaining it briefly and well. This is a great devotional for busy moms. If you need a new devotional book, I highly recommend checking this one out.

Intimacy with God
Cynthia Heald takes her readers through God’s invitation to us to come to Him, to abide in Him through our need to acknowledge Him and invite Him into our lives. She writes about living without fear and trusting fully in the Lord. She talks about the importance of daily communing with the Lord and dwelling in His presence by reading the Bible and praying fervently.
One of my favorite days was Day 19. This day focuses on Jeremiah 6:16 which talks about looking for the ancient paths that lead to good and going that way.
The path that is paved with truth and leads to goodness is the path that Jesus trod. Jesus emphatically proclaimed, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me” (John 14:6 NLT). The only path worth choosing is the eternal path that leads to God. The only path that offers rest in the one to His heart (pg 113).
I have always enjoyed studies by Cynthia Heald and this one was no exception. If you are desiring to draw closer to the Lord, this devotional, along with your Bible, is a wonderful foundation upon which to build.

comforting and encouraging
I felt God's peace throughout this book and I enjoyed the short chapters and the stories she used in the book. I love her seeking nature and how she draws us in to look at our relationship with the Lord.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a break and longing for some bonding with the Lord!
