Wonderful Study Guide

The book of Psalms in the Old Testament has long been a favorite book of mine. I love to read it when I need encouragement, an "uplifting" in my spirit or words of wisdom for a friend in despair. I was excited to review this study guide in the Life Change Series: A life-changing encounter with God's Word from the book of PSALMS. The book begins with a short chapter on how to use this study. Then there are ten lessons in which you are given scriptures in Psalms to study. There is a place to write your thoughts after given questions in the book. This study guide is great for personal use but can also be used in a small group study. After each lesson small group questions are given for discussion. I found this study to be a nice study for understanding the Psalms. It is not a study for each chapter in Psalms. In fact, the first lesson begins with Psalms 19:1-6: Prayers of Worship and Praise, then proceeds to take you through the whole 19th chapter. Lesson 2 is a mixture of verses from Psalms and John: Prayers of Confessions and Acknowledgement. Lesson 3 is a study of Prayers of Intercession and Supplication, A study of Psalm 5:1-3, Psalm 21: 1-2, Psalm 91: 14-16 and Psalm 102:16-17. Lesson 4 is a study of Prayers of Protection and Deliverance {I enjoyed this lesson immensely!}, Psalm 28:1-2, Psalm 3:1-4, Psalm 18:1-3Psalm 31:1-3 and Psalm 46:1-3 are used in this study. Lesson 5 studies Prayers of Vindication and Forgiveness. Psalm 73:1-11, Psalm 73:12-15, Psalm 73:16-20and Psalm 73:21-28 are used in this study. Lesson 6 is Prayers of Renewal and Restoration using Psalm 23:1-3, Psalm 23:4, Psalm 23:5 and Psalm 23:6, Lesson 7 is a great study on Prayer: Looking to the Past, Planning for the Future. Psalm 90:1-6, Psalm 90:7-9, Psalm 10-12, and Psalm 90:13-17 are the scriptures used in this study. Lesson 8 is the study of Prayer the Apparent Silence of God. Psalm 10:1-2, 17-18; Psalm 13:1-6;Psalm 22:1-2and Psalm 50:3-5 are studied in this lesson. Lesson 9 Prayer and Waiting on the Lord. Psalm 27:13-14, Psalm 40:1-3, Psalm 37:3-7, and Psalm 20-22 are studied in this lesson. Lesson 10 is a study of Prayers of Reward and Thanksgiving. Psalm 37:3-5, Psalm 58:11, Psalm 100:5, and Psalm 107:8-9 are linked together in this study. At the ending of the book there is a list of commentaries on Psalms, concordances, dictionaries, map, Bible atlases and so much more that can enhance your study. This is a small book loaded with a wealth of information on the book of Psalms! A 5 star study guide for those who want to study parts of Psalms!

Good study for a small group

I have used a couple of the books in the Life Change series before in a small group setting, and I thought it would be really great to use Psalms for personal study. Unfortunately, my overall response to this particular study is that I really, really need the discussion from other people to make this study of Psalms work. Not that this isn't a good study. Over the course of ten lessons, you study a few Psalms in depth and you have almost all of the Psalms assigned in one of the lessons. Each lesson is set up with a key verse, a lesson objective, a desired action, a list of psalms (5-40 per lesson) that fit the lesson's topic, an introductory paragraph, and then the 'meat' of the study. That study is split up into four to five sections, each focusing on a section of a psalm. Half of the lessons study one or two psalms. Half of the lessons have you studying a portion of a different Psalm each day. The study really is great for a small group. One aspect I particularly liked with John in our small group that is also present in Psalms is the extra information segments that occur at the end of each segment. Each is a short description of something from the reading -- a cultural practice that wouldn't be familiar to modern readers, an elaboration on on concept, or something. I love these. Another point in small group study is that there are plenty of questions at different levels -- you won't discuss them all, and some would be totally inappropriate in some groups. But there are plenty of questions to choose from. If you are looking for a personal study, my recommendation would be to get a good look at the specific book in this series that you are thinking about, and to figure out if it will work for you. John, which I did in a small group, would have worked for me on my own. Psalms does not. For this particular book, for me, I need the input of others. Psalms

I found this book a very useful study guide,.It starts out with a brief introduction to Psalms and asks the question does prayer make a difference? after using this book you will hopefully come away with the knowledge of how to pray more effectively. In the 10 lessons i found things that i had not seen before so this book would be good for someone who is just starting out on their spiritual walk with God.It's a compact book filled with useful information.

Best for those new to Bible study

This Bible study divides the Psalms into ten different topics or categories, such as prayers of worship and praise, prayers of confession and acknowledgment, and so forth. Each section explores one of these themes and chooses a single Psalm from it to look at for study. As readers are walked through these individual Psalms, the study provides 12 to 20 questions to help them reflect on the Psalm and apply it to their own lives. Though each section only looks at a single Psalm (and the study itself explores only ten of the 150 total Psalms), this set-up provides readers with an understanding of how to study each Psalm, although, admittedly there is little depth to the questions and are likely geared toward those who are new to Bible study. The study also includes a listing all of the Psalms that fall into each specific category, which could be the most helpful part of the study guide: a way to divide up and read the Psalms on one’s own, based on category. While the study has its merits, particularly for those who are new to Bible study, I felt that it failed to deliver the promise of, "A life-changing encounter with God’s Word…," as the subtitle reads. Because it is very brief and, to use the cliché "an inch deep and mile wide," I think it’s probably a pass for the more seasoned Bible readers who are looking for an in-depth study of the Psalms. (I received a copy of "Psalms" for free to review through the NavPress Blogger review program.

Psalms

Psalms, from the NavPress’s LifeChange Series, helps readers better understand prayer by looking at how Biblical figures prayed. This 10-week Bible study tool is designed to be used in groups, but individuals can also benefit from it. Rather than go through the Book of Psalms in order, LifeChange categorizes psalms according to their theme. Each of the ten lessons contains scriptures, discussion questions, optional application activities, further study activities, and historical information. This LifeChange title will not give readers an in-depth or exhaustively understanding of the Psalms, but it is thought provoking. Some of the discussion questions are overly simple. One question asks, for example, “Why is waiting on God often challenging to our patience?” Other questions are somewhat odd for discussion groups. The lesson on planning and prayer asks readers to use their family history to determine how many years they have left to live. However, the number of stimulating activities greatly outnumbers the less than perfect ones. Some of my favorites include discussing why natural disasters are called “acts of God” but natural wonders are not. I also enjoyed the “blame percentage activity” that helps to solve grievances between people. One of my favorite features of this Bible study is the historical facts and literary analysis included with each lesson. One of which explains how the “tsinnah” and maghen” shields are metaphors for God’s protective power. While this book will not give readers a complete and extensive study of the Book of Psalms, it will lead to thoughtful reflection and discussion.

Good Reflective Study

'A Life-changing Encounter With God’s Word from the Book of Psalms', published by NavPress, is the latest in the LifeChange Series of Bible studies on the Books of the Bible. This work provides a good introduction to the Psalms if your intent is a “reflective” type of study. If you are looking for an “in-depth” study of the Psalms, you my need to look elsewhere, or at least be ready to supplement with additional resources. The authors list as one of the objectives of the LifeChange Series: “To give you all the historical background, word definitions, and explanatory notes you need so that your only other reference is the Bible.” If we evaluate this statement in the context of a reflective study, then they may well have reached their goal, but not so if the context is otherwise. That being said, I would not hesitate to use this as the primary resource in a small-group study with the goal being a personal encounter with the Psalms. There is enough explanatory material given to answer cursory questions that may arise and the reflective questions do an excellent job of focusing attention on the intent of the Psalms and eliciting from the participant a careful introspective survey of their own life in response. This could be a good way to engage the Psalms for the purpose of spiritual growth, especially in the area of prayer. The Book of Psalms is after all referred to as the “prayer-book of the Bible.” So, if you are interested in a study that allows the Psalms to shape the participants prayer life, this resource may be just what you are looking for. I received this book from the publisher as part of their blogger review program. I was not required to write a favorable review and the opinions expressed are my own.

Good Introduction to the Psalms

The newest addition to the Navpress “Life Change Series” is Psalms. This series covers individual books of the bible and is primarily intended for small group bible studies. I have used this study series in the past for the gospel of John, so I was familiar with the layout before digging into this resource. While this series is not intended for “deep” bible study where, it is helpful for those who are interested in improving their understanding of God’s Word. The authors of this bible study book have divided it up into ten chapters: 1. Prayers of Worship and Praise 2. Prayers of Confession and Acknowledgement 3. Prayers of Intercession and Supplication 4. Prayers of Protection and Deliverance 5. Prayers of Vindication and Forgiveness 6. Prayers of Renewal and Restoration 7. Prayer: Looking to the Past, Planning for the Future 8. Prayer and the Apparent Silence of God 9. Prayer and Waiting on the Lord 10. Prayers of Reward and Thanksgiving As you can see, “prayer” is the major theme of this study which is not surprising given that we are dealing with the book of Psalms. The Psalms give us a crash course in knowing God and the psalmists (most notably David) are brutally honest before God, often voicing their anger and frustration. The authors of this study to not skirt these difficult issues and help the reader understand that all the psalms help us to know God more, even the prayers of vindication. For me, the most helpful aspect about this study is the chapter headings that are listed above and how the authors have organized the Psalms. No matter what you are feeling or what’s going on in your life, the psalms have the potential to meet you where you are at and direct your focus to God. In each chapter, all the particular psalms under that category are listed, with some overlap between the different groupings. I would use this resource more a supplemental tool to go along with more in-depth exegetical resources, but if you are looking for an easy to understand overview of the psalms that asks important questions of the text, you might want to look into purchasing this resource. LifeChange: Psalms by the Navigators

I had already worked through the Philippians LifeChange guide so was excited to see how the Navigators would deal with the Psalms. I was not disappointed. The book works through each genre of prayer shown in the Psalms, providing in-depth study questions, practical applications, useful illustrations, and hands-on group guides for each. Each chapter gives a series of Psalms which could be studied, and works through a selection of verses in great detail to give a headstart. The language is straightforward but not patronisingly simple. The concepts are complex but the application is easy to understand and thoroughly biblical. The historical context and word studies cast real light on this important Bible book. In case you haven't picked it up, I am a fan. If you're looking for a personal or group study guide for prayer or the Psalms, look no further. There's even an immensely useful list of resources at the end. A Great Little Study Guide for the book of Psalms

Psalms is a book in the Life Change series by NavPress it would be a great study guide for the individual person or would also be great used in a group setting. Since the layout of this book is very simple and straight forward I think it would be an easy study guide for the new christian or someone a little more seasoned in God's word who wants to do a more in depth study of the book of Psalms. I really like the clear concise way that each lesson is set up with questions for thought and discussion as well as a section called which are questions that give way for more personal reflection. I would have to say that overall my favorite part of the lesson was the exercise called For Further Study, in this section we are often given scripture to look up on our own that is usually outside the book of Psalms that ties into the lesson we are being taught, so when you finish a lesson in addition to learning more about Psalms you are actually directed to scripture that is very pertinent to what is being taught about Psalms. I would recommend this book to anyone young or old who is looking for a simple straight forward way to study the book of Psalms. Great Series

The study is well organized and superbly written. I love that there is so much by way of application questions and activities and that there are reference notes already in the study. It's intended to be that you only need this book and your Bible to study and that is a big bonus for me. I can easily get "bogged down" with trying to find historical and topical references and information that I forget the spirit of the study. The study is written at a more-than-basic but not seminary-education-required level. I think this will be very useful as I teach my women's Sunday School class in the future. It will be easily adaptable to all the different levels in my class.

Highly Recommend!

The newest in the LifeChange Series by NavPress is a study on Psalms. The writers approach the book of Psalms as a book of prayers. The ten chapters focus on topics like prayers of worship and praise and prayer and waiting on the Lord. Each chapter states a lesson objective, a desired action, and a list of psalms for this lesson. A combination of commentary, selected readings, questions, and word studies allow individuals to process and gain a better understanding of the book of Psalms. The margins of each page include additional questions or suggestions for study that will allow the user to take their personal study deeper. Chapters end with suggestions for group study that will help new group leaders facilitate study and discussion easily. I have done several of these studies in the past and always love them. They're great for individual study or for a group setting. Plus, I can do the "basic" study for each chapter or go deeper with the questions in the margins if I have more time or if I want to learn more about a specific topic. I would HIGHLY recommend this study (or any other in the series) for those looking for a new devotional study. I received a FREE copy of this study from NavPress in exchange for my fair and honest review.

PRAY... Learn all about it....

This is a study of the book of Psalms, it teaches about prayer and how to make a change in your own life with GOD by your side. The book is very easy to carry and will fit in any purse, bible cover or your briefcase. The set up is in a very easy format in very basic English. The pages have a side bar for notes and the questions have space to be answered. This is a 10 week study and each week covers a different subject, examples: week 1 prayer, week 2 confession and acknowledgement, week 3 intersession and supplication… and so on. I found this to be a great weekly bible study for teens or adults, Sunday School or mid week at home study. It is the type of study that you don’t have to start from the beginning, if you have new people they can jump right into the study at whatever week you are on. I enjoyed this study and learned a lot that I didn’t know about the psalms, it gave me a different perspective on prayer and how to apply prayer to everyday life. It is the type of study that you can do at your own pace and get a lot out of it. I would recommend this to anyone.

"Gods Word Is ALWAYS Life-Changing"

Life Change Series: "A Life-Changing Encounter with God's Word From the Book of Psalms" By: The Navigators "A Nav Press Bible Study Empahsizing: Personal Discovery of God's Word, Application of Scriptue to your daily life, Scene-setting historical insights, Leaders guides for small groups, Helpful word origins and definitions, Stimulating discussion questions, Challenging optional projects." This Bible study is very simple yet engaging, for both the teacher and students alike. It will take you on a journey throughout the book of Psalms, helping you to gain new and greater insight like never before. If you thought you knew everything about the book of Psalms, think again, you will be pleasantly suprised at how this study will use God's word to challenge you, and open your heart and mind to Him, His Spirit and His word, as you go through each study. This Bible study is so wonderful in many ways! It opens the reader's mind up to God's word, teaches the reader things he probably didn't even realize were right there in the Word, and helps the reader to develop a new love and better relationship with fellowshiping with God in His Word daily. It doesn't get much better than that, does it? This Bible study book would be perfect for individual study, large group study in a church, such as Sunday School, or small goup study, such as a Bible study group. It would even be great for a teen or youth group! This book has endless possibilities, as it is easy to understand, teach, and for the students to become engaged in and follow along. I loved how each lesson was mapped out, so to speak. There is a "Lesson Objective", "Desired Action", and the listed "Psalms" for the lesson. Then at the end of each lesson there is an exercise for the group to participate in, that consists of a, "Warm-up", "Questions", and "Prayer". I thought that these activities would be helpful for group studies to be able to become more engaging, if that was the purpose, of the use of this book. Otherwise I didn't feel that the ending "group activity" as being 100% necessary, for an individual to be able to use the study on their own. Good basic study

“A life-changing encounter with God’s Word from the book of Psalms” is what the cover reads. I can’t say I find it life-changing in and of itself. This Bible study guidebook did not impress me when I first cracked its paperback cover. The mere design of the first instructional pages was distracting; it was difficult to find where I was actually supposed to begin. But as I delved deeper into the study, I found a fundamentally good program. The study considers not only text but also context (essential!) of the passages. It provides questions and opportunities not only for discussion but also for group and personal application. The exercises and activities it recommends are not revolutionary, but more importantly they aren’t cheesy and outdated. Overall, the study is refreshingly simple. The writers have provided enough (but not too many) questions that are open-ended for discussion. They call for discussion to lead to application. They do call for a life-change experience. The study’s downfall, however, is the same as its strength: simplicity. Because it is a basic, simple study, it isn’t going to solve a rookie Bible study leader’s problems. This study will still require a dynamic and knowledgeable leader to help answer the group’s questions and lead discussion. Overall, I find the study to have great integrity and interest while resisting the Christian cultural urge to be “edgy” with its design, content, or application. Bravo.
