Extraordinary Read

NavPress sent me a free copy of Doug Sherman's book, More Than Ordinary, in exchange for an honest review. Mr. Sherman takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of the ups and downs of his spiritual life. As he shows you these milestones the reader is also given insights into improving their own spiritual well-being. More Than Ordinary encourages deeper communion with God rather than leading an ordinary life solely trying to placate the reader's vision of their God. Living with God can be a fresh adventure beckoning you everyday. God never intended life to be "normal," but rather filled with a tapestry of vibrant colors woven into one's experience of living. I am excited to share my experience with this book. Over the course of my reading I challenged myself to apply the material to my own life. Rather than getting caught up into my day to day routine, I found a greater awareness of God's presence in my life. Sherman advises to invite God into regular conversations as you do whatever and any activity you are engaged in. Live life with Him by your side, instead of in obscurity and loneliness. I realized how much I could see the attributes of God in nature surrounding me or in the kindnesses of strangers. The still, small voice of our Lord will grow a little louder as you become attuned to Him. Anyone who desires a deeper love of our Heavenly Father and a more intense purpose in life would be well-advised to pick a copy up of More Than Ordinary. Who wants to settle for the mundane when they can have a taste of heaven on earth? God wants to share His abundance with everyone out of His plenteous love and grace. It's when we humbly realize what God is capable of giving that we will graciously begin to allow Him to fill our lives for His purpose. Life truly can be More Than Ordinary- extraordinary.

Enlightening and Life-Changing!

The transformation process is not about self-improvement or the pursuit of good character qualities so we can have a better life. It’s about experiencing God in a moment-by-moment connection with Him and processing all of life with Him through His Word. Walking with God does not happen merely by obtaining biblical knowledge or having a daily morning quiet time or attending church regularly. It is simpler than that, AND much harder than that, according to Doug Sherman in his book More Than Ordinary: Enjoying Life with God. In his book, he expands on the two main steps of your walking feet: 1) Seeing God more clearly and 2) Responding to Him accordingly. Doug Sherman goes on to say that walking with God is the hardest thing you will ever do, and if anyone told you it was easy, they were wrong. Your loyalty and love for God will be tested as well as your determination and confidence in His leadership. However, you will avoid a lot of self-inflicted pain that people suffer when they go their own way. Life is simpler when only one thing really matters to you, and you can live above your circumstances by relying on His strength and power. Don’t judge the book by its ordinary title or simple cover. More than Ordinary is full of biblical truth on who God is, what it means to walk with Him, and how to truly practice experiencing His presence through a moment-by-moment walk with Him. It is easy to read yet profound. It is not just theoretical, but practical too. I wrote six pages of notes of truths that I want to remember from this life-changing book in hopes that reviewing them will help me keep walking closer with God. This book really spoke to my heart and I want to share it with all my friends! I received a complimentary copy of this book from NavPress Publishers as part of their Blogger Review Program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

More Than Ordinary by Doug Sherman

In this book Doug Sherman explains that it is actually possible to enjoy life with God! Based on his experience as a teenager in which he handed every area of his life over to God and was surprised to find that Christians actually seemed less happy than other people, he has compiled a biblical argument for how life can truly be enjoyed through our relationship with God. The book is separated into two sections: Encountering God, in which we learn about God's character, and Enjoying God, in which that character is practically applied to our daily lives. Sherman's a good communicator - I found the book easy to read but not over-simplistic - and he has an ability to explain some pretty enormous truths concisely. The concepts presented here aren't ground-breaking by any means but I found it really useful to be reminded of the importance of the Christian basics like prayer, purity and witness. Each chapter finishes with a paragraph about how to practically apply the lessons learnt; I imagine this could work well as a devotional in which you think about the chapter during the day or week, or as a tool for a small group discussion. I'd be happy to recommend this book to any Christian but particularly those who have been Christians for a while - it really takes us back to the foundations of Christianity in a way that isn't patronising. exciting and challenging testimony

With a subtitle of ‘Enjoying Life With God’, I expected ‘More Than Ordinary’ to be an exciting title and I was not disappointed. Written from the standpoint of a man who has a life in business (with frequent trips away from home), a husband and father with conflicting demands on his time alongside writing and speaker commitments, this is an author well placed to write on making life with God a purposeful and fulfilling adventure. This is a revealing book, telling much about the author’s upbringing, encounter with the Saviour and the transformation in his life with God ever present, active, and interested in his daily circumstances. He contrasts this with the lives that others articulate as boring and flavourless, yet responsible and dutiful as God might expect of them. This book urges us to strive for more practical living of Biblical truths and promises, walking with God and with a growing zeal to know Him and make Him known. The writer notes that life is more than ordinariness and relates an exciting exploration of God’s design for us, His expectations for us and our expectations of Him, God’s plans and direction for us, our responses to His leadership, His work in the world and His guidance in the Bible for the many issues we face in life. He tells of periods of accelerated progress in living life with God and ‘seasons of going backwards’ to indifference, which many readers might relate to in part. This is a testimony of being focused and captivated, of the writer’s own and others response to the challenges of daily life and sharing of that experience. It is a book that relates back to scripture, quotes some of the great writers and commentators on Bible truths and a book that asks for a personal response. Even at over 200 pages, it is very readable and while you may not read it all at once, you will find yourself highlighting parts you enjoyed, found useful or want to share with others. A book I will commend to others as a well written testimony and a challenge to lead a fuller life.

Enjoying Every Day with Jesus

Doug Sherman's reason behind writing this book, is so that every believer can have a "More Than Ordinary" walk with God everyday. He begins the book with some of his own incredible story - that's what hooked me. I always enjoy reading of other believer's walks with God because not everyone's walk is always close and pleasant; quite often there are struggles and times when God seems distant. I think we all gather strength for the journey from one another's stories. Doug gives many examples from his own life of times when he struggled in his walk with God - and many of these will ring true in the lives of other believers. I found myself in some of the sitautions that Doug experienced. In some of those situations I felt the same way he did; sometimes reacting much the way he did. In some current situations I'm dealing with, I'm taking Doug's advice toward how to approach them and it is helping me enjoy my time with God despite the circumstances. At the end of each chapter in the first section of the book, he includes "Encountering God Suggestions" - practical ways that we can continue to encounter the God of our lives. The second half of the book, Doug's chapters focus on enjoying God and each chapter of this section ends with "Responding To God Suggestions". Doug's writing is very straight-forward, much like a conversation between him and the reader. As I read this book, the following statement hit me: "The most important step we will ever take with Jesus will always be the next one." I've shared this statement with many family and friends - and I'm sure I always will. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, from a new believer to a life-long believer, there's something for everyone in the pages. Gamechanger

The message in this book is like a view of the fog burning off the Smokey Mountains at sunrise... Ahh! Doug has opened to me a whole new perspective of experiencing and responding to Jesus as a real person. Someone once said that our trajectory in life is determined by what we REALLY believe about God. In this book, Doug paints, with scripture, a fresh picture of who God really is. Then, he encourgages us to allow that picture to be ever-expanding. What if we could walk moment-by-moment in an interactive relationship with this good, living King? What if the bible became a conversation starter on a daily adventure following Him? What if we sat around the dinner table at night sharing stories of how we encountered Him... at work, at home, through tasks, in the car, on the fields, etc... What if we began to expect God to bring someone across our path each day that did not know Him yet? Now, this is the journey worth taking and the God worth pursuing. Where's the bulk order button?!
