“His immeasurable love; His boundless grace; His manifold goodness; His perfect will; His incomparable ways; His abundant comfort … .” These are some of the section headings in Drawing Near to the Heart of God, by Cynthia Heald. The subtitle is Encouragement for Your Lifetime Journey, a modest promise, for the book delivers far more than mere encouragement (if encouragement can be a “mere”). It delivers, when heard and heeded, what cannot fully be described in words- a deep sense of closeness to God. Love, grace, goodness, sovereignty, will, ways, comfort … these attributes, when simply stated in series in connection with God, who personifies them, already move the heart towards Him. When appropriately coupled with such adjectives as “immeasurable, boundless, manifold, absolute, perfect, incomparable, abundant, the effect is to set the heart singing on its way to God.
