Convicting and Challenging

Last year I received a 233 page Jerry Bridges book and 69 page Discussion Guide from NavPress on the subject of godliness. In its eighteen chapters Bridges focuses on developing the character traits of Galatians 5:22-23. I began reading this months ago. I then set it aside for some time. Not because this is not a good book, but because it is a challenging book. At times it can even be a frustrating book. Bridges turns to the Scriptures again and again to call others to grow in Christian character and grow in our relationship to God as well as to others. A book such as this is not an easy read. Rather, it is a convicting one. Bridges speaks honestly to his readers, drawing out the practical implications of following God’s Word and fleeing evil. Using the Discussion Guide on my own made the study even more challenging; it would have been easier to use in a Bible study setting, interacting with others and having weekly accountability. I finally had to set the Discussion Guide aside unfinished and focus on the book itself. Now that I have read the book, I will say that I truly appreciate what Bridges is communicating. I agree. I did not find this book enjoyable in the usual sense, yet I feel I internalized at least some of its message. I can see re-reading this book more slowly, studying it and attempting to put its principles into practice. I say “attempting” because Bridges certainly does call his readers to a high standard–yet I cannot say I disagree with any of it, and he supports it all with Scripture. I, and most other Christians I know, can certainly gain much from studying this challenging, convicting work. Disclosure: I received a free review copy of this title and its discussion guide through NavPress. No other compensation was received or expected. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Great Book!

As Jerry Bridges talks about Devotion in the first few chapters of the book, he emphasizes the importance of having the proper motivation and how to arrive to that place. Each chapter thereon focuses on godly traits, namely: humility, contentment, thankfulness, joy, holiness, self-Control, faithfulness, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, goodness and love. All these godly traits is not new to any of us. Even non-Christians are familiar with all these. But the lovely thing about this book is how Bridges is able to articulate the practical guidance on how we can develop that. It is downright amazing!

This book is a winner!!

Godliness is a subject plenty talk about these days. Rarely if ever do we hear how, through the Scriptures, just how exactly to do so. Author Jerry Bridges has not only talked about Godliness but has laid out a step by step scriptural plan in his book The Practice of Godliness. This outstanding book is based on Galatians 5:22-23. The book is well written and easy to understand. There is a flow to this work that makes it very hard to put down once you begin to see its value on your life. Also included is a study guide and blank cards for Scripture memorization. Bridges has challenged me with this work and I believe he will also challenge each of you to live a more godly life. After each chapter there are questions that will challenge you. I plan on using this book as not only a devotional but will be leading a small group discussion with this book and accompanying study guide as a basis. It’s that good! Two thumbs up for this one folks and I’ll be looking forward to reading more from Jerry Bridges. I received the book The Practice of Godliness by Jerry Bridges as part of Navpress blogger review program and was not asked to give a biased review.
