The Pursuit of Holiness helps us see clearly just what we should rely on God to do--and what we should accept responsibility for ourselves.
Description:
“Be holy, for I am holy,” commands God. But holiness is something that is often missed in the Christian’s daily life. According to Navigator author Jerry Bridges, that’s because we’re not exactly sure what our part in holiness is.
In The Pursuit of Holiness, he helps us see clearly just what we should rely on God to do--and what we should take responsibility for ourselves. As you deepen your relationship with God, learn more about His character, and understand the Holy Spirit's role in holiness, your spiritual growth will mature.

The Pursuit of Holiness
I just finished this book. It's chapters are short enough that it makes for a great daily devotional. The scripture references are excellent, practical, and worthy of daily memorization. My only regret is that this is not a year long daily devotional.

Classic Bridges
"Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord." Hebrews 12:14
In his book The Pursuit of Holiness, Jerry Bridges shares that the verse above suggests two thoughts in regard to pursuing a life of holiness: "first, that diligence and effort are required; and second, that is is a lifelong task". Bridges spends seventeen short and easy to read chapters helping the reader understand God's provision for our personal holiness while deliberately stressing our responsibility "feeling that this is an emphasis sorely needed among Christians today" all the while reminding that "holiness is a process, something we never completely attain in this life".
This book is only 153 pages in length, but don't let that fool you into questioning the content! Bridges is an expert at breaking such a weighty subject down into manageable portions. The chapters are short, giving you the ability to take the time needed to engage in the most important discipline of applying truth learned to your life. The chapters are short, but very "meaty". There are times I would read a paragraph and just have to stop and let the ministry of the Holy Spirit take over and "teach" me; places such as this quote:
"This call to a holy life is based on the fact that God Himself is holy. Because God is holy, He requires that we be holy. Many Christians have what we might call a 'cultural holiness'. They adapt to the character and behavior pattern of Christians around them. As the Christian culture around them is more or less holy, so these Christians are more or less holy. But God has not called us to be like those around us. He has called us to be like Himself. Holiness is nothing less than conformity to the character of God."
Bridges also has a companion Bible study guide to The Pursuit of Holiness. I would highly recommend both the book and the study guide. I am pleased to have added this title to my already growing library of writings from Mr. Bridges.
NavPress sent me a review copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges
The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges is a fine work that builds Biblical principles and guidelines that we need in order to obey God’s command to live a holy life. Bridges doesn’t just make claims that we should live holy and leave it at that. Instead, he shows from Scripture the need of living a holy life and how to attain it. This book truly demonstrates the pursuit of holiness.
A walk in holiness is essential. Bridges shows our role in holiness through demonstrating how holiness takes effort on our part. God has made it possible for us to walk in holiness, and He has made it our responsibility to do so. Bridges brings out amazing points as to where holiness comes from and how we determine holiness standards based on Scripture.
Rather than spending much time on specific holiness standards, Bridges lays the foundation of what holiness is, what it’s for, and how to pursue it through self-discipline and by building habits that lead to a live of holiness. A life of holiness truly is a life-long pursuit, but as Bridges eloquently shows, we are not in it alone. With God in our side and in our lives, we truly can pursue a life of holiness.
I highly recommend Jerry Bridges’ book The Pursuit of Holiness. It is a book that shows us the need of holiness in our lives, and how to apply the Word of God to our lives and build a holy life regardless of beliefs or denomination.

Outstanding Book
The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges was a very thought provoking book. The book focuses on the Christ follower desiring to pursue holiness. The book discusses how we as Christians need to take responsibility in our Christian walk. The book was difficult for me to read due to the truth of the words and the realization of how we as Christians need to live our life and carry on our personal marathon of pursuing holiness.
I have been a believer for over 30 years, however, found the book to really speak to my heart in my desire to live a holy life and not fall prey to accepting defeat. The book focuses on the role of the Holy Spirit in assisting us in our pursuit of holiness and how as humans we are not able to do it on our own. The chapters unfold full of scriptures to read and focus on as one reads the material communicated.
This book is one that I would read again and highly recommend to other Christian believers. It is well written and references scripture throughout.
