{"id":11305,"date":"2021-11-02T15:22:04","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T15:22:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.navpress.com\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/?p=11305"},"modified":"2022-08-24T18:46:01","modified_gmt":"2022-08-24T18:46:01","slug":"a-word-that-is-weird-compelling-and-contagious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.navpress.com\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/2021\/11\/a-word-that-is-weird-compelling-and-contagious\/","title":{"rendered":"A Word That Is Weird, Compelling, and Contagious"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019ve been thinking about <a href=\"\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/2022\/08\/8-tips-for-starting-a-disciplemaking-relationship\/\">disciplemaking <\/a>a lot lately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s probably not too surprising, seeing as how I\u2019m writing this for a blog called &#8220;The DiscipleMaker.&#8221; Between here, my work on the various resources published by <a href=\"\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/2022\/03\/wide-open-spaces\/\">NavPress<\/a>, and my involvement with the <a href=\"\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/2019\/01\/how-to-balance-discipleship-and-evangelism\/\">disciplemaking <\/a>mission of The Navigators, I hear and see the words \u201cmaking\u201d and \u201cdisciples\u201d in close proximity to one another more than pretty much any pair of words I can think of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, a lot of my brain space is occupied by <a href=\"\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/2022\/07\/how-do-i-know-who-to-invest-my-disciplemaking-efforts-in\/\">disciplemaking<\/a>. Bully for me, I guess. As it happens, <em><a href=\"\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/2018\/12\/a-clear-and-personalized-path-for-discipleship\/\">disciplemaking <\/a><\/em>is not common language. Most people never come across it in casual conversation\u2014even over donuts in the church lobby or in small group Bible studies. Disciplemaking is, by and large, an unspoken assumption, an implicit aim of God\u2019s people that is rarely made explicit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve actually been in meetings in the past where we\u2019ve wondered out loud if the word <em>disciple <\/em>is even intelligible anymore. There could hardly be a more biblical word, and yet it turns out the Bible is pretty much the only place most people run across it. Everywhere else, increasingly, the word elicits a blank stare, a furrowed brow, a \u201cWhat in the world are you talking about\u201d expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the only place you are likely to find a word is in the Bible, it\u2019s probably an important word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For The Navigators, <a href=\"\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/2019\/01\/getting-real-discipleship-started-in-your-church\/\">disciplemaking <\/a>is a lifestyle, the logical extension of a profession of faith. If you follow Jesus, this is what you\u2019re following him into. It involves five things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Walking with Jesus.<\/li><li>Knowing and living the Scriptures.<\/li><li>Participating in Christian community.<\/li><li>Engaging those who don\u2019t know Christ.<\/li><li>Reproducing spiritual generations.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the spiritual generations bit that confuses everyone. Like <em>disciplemaking,<\/em> that\u2019s uncommon language. It\u2019s meant to suggest that the normal Christian life involves a regular pattern of real, actual people growing in these five traits as an outcome of their encounters with you and, through you, God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But with the exception of \u201creproducing spiritual generations,\u201d I\u2019m struck how down-to-earthy the language of these traits is. Disciplemaking as a word is strange for many people, but a <em>lifestyle <\/em>of disciplemaking is surprisingly common\u2014it\u2019s doable, observable, reproducible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s part of the genius of the gospel, I think. Jesus has done for us what we can\u2019t do for ourselves\u2014he has borne our sin and defeated death. But he has invited us to do with him what he wants for all of us, to seed the world with the life that comes from walking with him, from honing our instincts according to the Scriptures, from gathering together in his name and under his authority, by loving our neighbors as ourselves, and by having a vision of eternal life that is compelling and contagious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe that\u2019s why I\u2019ve been thinking a lot about disciplemaking lately.
