Here are several short, practical posts from his always-timely book, <\/em>Simplify Your Spiritual Life: Spiritual Disciplines for the Overwhelmed<\/a>. In these selected excerpts, Whitney will help us consider ways to simplify our journaling, our prayer, our Christian life in general, our priorities, and our time in Scripture. In this post on time in Scripture, Whitney shows us that it’s good to sing from the Psalms to the Lord.<\/em><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was praying through Psalm 68 recently. When I came to the words, \u201cSing to God, sing praises to His name\u201d (verse 4), guess what I did? Yes, I did exactly what the text said. . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are ten reasons why it\u2019s good to sing from the Psalms when you are alone before the Lord:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. It\u2019s good because the Bible says it\u2019s \u201cgood to sing praises to our God\u201d (Psalm 147:1).<\/li>
  2. It\u2019s good because it helps you to \u201csing to Him a new song,\u201d which the Bible commands in verses such as Psalm 33:3 (see also Psalm 96:1; 98:1; 149:1).<\/li>
  3. It\u2019s good because the Bible says to sing \u201cpsalms, hymns, and spiritual songs\u201d (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16).<\/li>
  4. It\u2019s good because it nourishes your soul as only the words God inspired for us to sing can do.<\/li>
  5. It\u2019s good because it expresses to the Lord what\u2019s in your heart in a divinely appointed way.<\/li>
  6. It\u2019s good because singing God\u2019s Word reinforces His truth in your heart and mind.<\/li>
  7. It\u2019s good because along with your mind it involves your body and soul, making for a more whole-person worship of God.<\/li>
  8. It\u2019s good because you learn to express yourself biblically.<\/li>
  9. It\u2019s good because it\u2019s enlivening to your soul to sing words that are \u201cliving and powerful\u201d (Hebrews 4:12).<\/li>
  10. It\u2019s good because you unite with what the people of God throughout the world have sung for thousands of years.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    It really is \u201cgood to sing praises to our God.\u201d Enjoy the goodness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
