It is the one passage that provides pastors impetus to enforce discipleship amongst their people. Folks engaged in the daily task of discipling hold on to this verse, indicating it as their \u201cm.o.\u201d<br \/>\nThe two words embedded here\u2014go and make\u2014are verbs, commands. You can\u2019t rest on your laurels and \u201cgo.\u201d You can\u2019t \u201cmake\u201d simply by pontificating, considering, thinking. There is definitely going to be some activity involved in going and making.<br \/>\nAnd yet . . .<br \/>\nIt was interesting for me personally when I went back to read this verse recently. I had grown up in a Christian home, the son of a pastor, and now was working for an organization known for its discipling and discipleship methods. But I must confess, I don\u2019t think I had paid much attention to the verse that precedes this one.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAll authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.\u201d \u2013 Matthew 28:18<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s powerful. This passage follows Mary Magdalene confronting an empty tomb, the disciples being subsequently informed, and then their meeting up with the risen Savior, Jesus. It is in verse 18 where he empowers them\u2014and, frankly, us all. \u201cAll authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.\u201d For that reason, therefore, \u201cgo and make disciples of all nations.\u201d Before He sends us, Jesus empowers us with His authority, an authority that binds heaven and earth.<br \/>\nWow. Yowza.
