Miller, author of\u00a0<em>A Praying Life: Connecting with God in a Distracting World<\/em><br \/>\nI wrote a book on prayer but, until 2008, I never thought about praying with my daughter every morning. Let me explain.<br \/>\nMy daughter Kim has multiple disabilities\u2014including autism\u2014so everything takes a little longer in the mornings. We\u2019d go through the motions of getting <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3968 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.navpress.com\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/wp-content\/uploads\/dishes-197_1920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"166\" \/>dressed and eating breakfast, and then I\u2019d prop up Kim\u2019s speech computer in front of her so she could pray. Often, I\u2019d do the dishes while she was praying because I had to get to work.<br \/>\nBut one morning in 2008 I was convicted that I should sit down with Kim and look at her\u2014pay attention to her like Jesus did\u2014while she was praying. As soon as I did that, Kim\u2019s prayers came alive. She excitedly began to tell people that she would pray for them, and then she would pray for them on the spot. Kim loves to pray for people who are struggling with anger or who are sick. We also pick out \u201cthe worst\u201d grandkid each morning and pray for him or her. We\u2019re praying for Maggie right now, because she gets feisty.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Praying with Kim\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/02hwiO5Fnbg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nMy wife, Jill, and I never grow tired of hearing Kim\u2019s electronic voice chattering away, making her requests to God (and often making us laugh in the process). Kim knows that we love to hear what\u2019s on her heart. In the same way, she knows that God never grows tired of her requests. Kim believes, like a child, that he delights in her and has the power to do good on her behalf.<br \/>\n<strong>Kim never learned the non-real, non-personal ways of praying that so many of us have been taught.<\/strong> She doesn\u2019t put on a religious face or clean herself up when she prays. She doesn\u2019t wait until she\u2019s more hopeful or less tired. No concern is too big or too small. Kim fearlessly brings her real self\u2014not to mention her real family and friends\u2014to God and asks for help.
