{"id":7034,"date":"2019-09-24T16:33:55","date_gmt":"2019-09-24T21:33:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedisciplemaker.org\/?p=7034"},"modified":"2019-09-24T16:33:55","modified_gmt":"2019-09-24T21:33:55","slug":"give-us-our-daily-bread","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.navpress.com\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/2019\/09\/give-us-our-daily-bread\/","title":{"rendered":"Give Us Our Daily Bread"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><h3>Praying for you need &#8230; today.<\/h3>\n<p>Few people in modern times have demonstrated the power of petitionary prayer more powerfully and consistently than the nineteenth-century philanthropist and pastor George M\u00fcller, who started 117 schools, cared for 10,024 orphans, educated 120,000 children and was accused of \u201craising the poor above their natural state.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><br \/>\nHis legacy is made even more remarkable by the well-documented fact that, instead of appealing for money and making his financial needs publicly known, M\u00fcller trusted God to fund this vast operation purely through the power of prayer, raising over $97 million in today\u2019s money in this way.<\/p>\n<h3>Thank God before the food arrives.<\/h3>\n<p>With so many mouths to feed and no conventional fundraising strategy, George M\u00fcller was often forced to take the prayer for daily bread very literally indeed. On one occasion, he stood before three hundred hungry orphans gathered for breakfast, knowing that there was no food in the kitchen, and said grace, thanking God in faith for the food \u201cyou are going to give us to eat.\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7035 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.navpress.com\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/wp-content\/uploads\/George-Mueller.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><br \/>\nSuddenly, there was a banging at the door and the local baker entered carrying three huge trays of fresh bread, explaining that he\u2019d been up since two o\u2019clock that morning baking for them. The milkman appeared next, announcing that his cart had broken down outside and wondering if they could use his load of fresh milk? Hundreds of children got their daily bread that morning, washed down with creamy milk. It was a breakfast they would surely remember for the rest of their lives whenever they prayed the Lord\u2019s Prayer.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Daily bread doesn&#8217;t guarantee Nutella.<\/h3>\n<p>The notion of \u201cdaily bread\u201d harks back to the Old Testament when God fed his people in the wilderness with manna that only remained fresh for a day. There is a strong sense in this phrase, therefore, of asking for today\u2019s needs rather than tomorrow\u2019s wants. It\u2019s not that there\u2019s anything wrong with requesting a nicer car, deliverance from mosquitoes, or three urns of fresh milk. It\u2019s just that we have no right to expect or insist on an unending stream of luxuries. Daily bread means daily bread; Nutella is not guaranteed.
