All our offenses were laid on him (Isaiah 59:12)\u2014our DUIs, gossip, envy, little white lies, big gaping lies, fudged income-tax returns, relational violence in the line at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tyndale.com\/sites\/readthearc\/einstein-bros-bagels-now-serving-common-grace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Einstein Bros. Bagels<\/a>. Once we\u2019ve stood before the crucified Savior and embraced his story, it\u2019s hard to be personally offended with someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Kingdom of truth, beauty, and goodness does not come by convincing people we are right at any cost or by cramming our truth down someone\u2019s throat. The Kingdom of truth, beauty, and goodness comes through something much more powerful than our attempts to persuade. Jesus set the Kingdom in motion when he was crucified, and he invites us into the building of that Kingdom with these words: \u201cIf any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me\u201d (Matthew 16:24, NLT). The Kingdom is about letting go of another person\u2019s throat.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-coblocks-click-to-tweet\"><p class=\"wp-block-coblocks-click-to-tweet__text\">The Kingdom of truth, beauty, and goodness does not come by convincing people we are right at any cost or by cramming our truth down someone\u2019s throat. Before we file that away as a platitude, we need to remember crosses are for getting crucified by those who hate us because we love them. Crosses are for bearing another person\u2019s hell. Crosses are for carrying another person\u2019s wounds\u2014sometimes the wounds of those who have hurt us. <em>Love always leaves a mark.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easier to be personally offended than it is to be crucified.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easier to be personally offended than to invite someone you don\u2019t understand or approve of to lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easier to be personally offended than to ask questions. It\u2019s easier to be personally offended than to risk getting involved with people who might hurt you.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Instead of cultivating offenses, do we have the courage to pick up a cross?<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-coblocks-click-to-tweet\"><p class=\"wp-block-coblocks-click-to-tweet__text\">It\u2019s easier to be personally offended than to ask questions. It\u2019s easier to be personally offended than to risk getting involved with people who might hurt you.<\/p><a class=\"wp-block-coblocks-click-to-tweet__twitter-btn has-button-color\" style=\"background-color:#d19f2a\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?&amp;text=It%E2%80%99s%20easier%20to%20be%20personally%20offended%20than%20to%20ask%20questions.%20It%E2%80%99s%20easier%20to%20be%20personally%20offended%20than%20to%20risk%20getting%20involved%20with%20people%20who%20might%20hurt%20you.&amp;url=https:\/\/www.navpress.com\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/embrace-the-new-thing-that-god-is-doing\/&amp;via=NavPress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tweet<\/a><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p>Pastor and author Phil Vaughn describes how \u201cpicking up a cross\u201d and being willing to die to ourselves can resurrect something new and change who we are in interactions with others:<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>What if the problem isn\u2019t really the issue. What if my perspective is the problem . . . the way I see it. In other words, what if what I think I know is in the way of what I need to learn?<\/p><p>I\u2019ve spent the last couple of weeks pondering the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus in John 3.<\/p><p>Jesus tells Nicodemus that if he wants to see the Kingdom of God he needs to be, \u201cborn again.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p>What an intriguing phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It seems as if Jesus is telling Nicodemus to:<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Start over. Begin again. Forget what you think you know, Nicodemus. It\u2019s in the way of what you need to learn. You can\u2019t see \u201cnew\u201d because of the \u201cold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Listen with new ears.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Challenge your currently held assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The structure that got you this far is now in the way. Dismantle it with gratitude and embrace the New Thing that God is doing.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Start over and approach this as a beginner . . . as helpless and innocent as a newborn infant\u2014be born again. Only then can you see the unimaginable grace and mercy of an all-loving God who is leading you to new places.
