But how difficult this is for those of us who have been taught that in our walk with God, feelings themselves are inferior and insignificant compared to discipline, effort, and performance. That was the case with my friend Abby, a vivacious, gifted twenty-year-old I met a few years back in a class I was teaching at Ecola Bible College on the Oregon coast. One evening we sat down at Mo\u2019s Seafood and Chowder on the water, and she told me her story:<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>I\u2019m the oldest of seven kids raised in a missionary pastor\u2019s home, and I\u2019ve spent my whole life following the rules. I attended church several times a week, and by the time I graduated from high school, I\u2019d read the Bible through at least four times. I still read it every morning\u2014I\u2019m supposed to, right? But I\u2019m bored stiff. The truth is, Pastor Kevin, though I\u2019ve tried everything to feel close to God\u2014I don\u2019t. In fact, I\u2019ve spent my first twenty years trying to be the tough one\u2014keeping everyone else\u2019s spirits up and bottling hurts from friends and when I did feel something painful, telling myself I needed to stop being a baby and get over it. So deep inside I not only don\u2019t feel God or his love for me\u2014I simply .&nbsp;.&nbsp;. don\u2019t .&nbsp;.&nbsp;. feel. So, what do I do?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p class=\"body-text-sp\">Sound like anyone you know? Maybe Abby\u2019s heart that evening reflects your own frustrated heart just now. If so, listen carefully. \u201cAbby,\u201d I said tenderly, \u201cit\u2019s time to get alone\u2014and maybe for the first time in your life, have a real talk with God. Tell him your truth. Shout, scream\u2014pour your heart out to him. Let him know how you feel .&nbsp;.&nbsp;. about everything. Don\u2019t hold anything back, even if you\u2019re angry, even if you say things you never thought you could say to God. He loves you. He\u2019s your Father. He can handle it. In fact, I promise you\u2014he\u2019s been waiting for this moment for a long, long time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3t2TZo7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.navpress.com\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/wp-content\/uploads\/Free-tDM-Article-Banner-1024x205.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8930\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"body-text\">The next day, Abby wandered in the gray Oregon drizzle to the underside of a nearby bridge, where she turned an emotional corner with her God. \u201cAt first, words weren\u2019t coming,\u201d she told me later. \u201cThen I said, \u2018God,\u2019 and with surprising difficulty, \u2018Father.\u2019 But it was when I muttered, \u2018I\u2019m angry\u2019 that the fountain erupted. For the first time in my life, <em><span class=\"cs-italic\">I allowed myself to feel with God.<\/span> <\/em>I was screaming and crying, \u2018Why have you always been so distant? I\u2019ve tried so hard to be close to you. And yet, I feel nothing. What\u2019s wrong with me? Please show me you love me and care for me. Please.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"body-text\">Don\u2019t miss this: The first time Abby allowed herself to feel with God .&nbsp;.&nbsp;. is the first time she felt God\u2019s presence with her\u2014\u201ca calming peace came over me,\u201d she said. And then, deep in her spirit, she heard his voice: <\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span class=\"cs-italic\">Abby, I see your heart. You\u2019ve always tried to be strong, but you need me. Let me help you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<p class=\"body-text\">Abby said, \u201cIn the past, whenever I pictured God, it was with his back to me. He was too busy helping the neglected, hurting people in the world to tend to the \u2018good kid.\u2019 But that day, for the first time in my life, I felt like God looked right at me. It was his tender, loving gaze\u2014focused not just on the world but on me, his daughter\u2014that finally broke through.\u201d You know what else Abby told me as we reminisced about that life-changing afternoon? As she poured out her heart to God, she finally felt released from the pressure to perform.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author\"><figure class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__avatar\"><img class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__avatar-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.navpress.com\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/wp-content\/uploads\/BUTCHER-Author-Photo-bordered.png\" alt=\"Kevin Butcher\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__content\"><span class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__name\">Kevin Butcher<\/span><p class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__biography\">was a lead pastor for 35 years\u2014the last 17 in urban Detroit\u2014and is now the founder and executive director of Rooted Ministries, Inc., a nonprofit designed to come alongside isolated, wounded, discouraged pastors and their families.
