But people can also practice this pattern on their own. (I use it regularly in my devotional practice.) To incorporate holy reading and listening to Scripture into your <a href=\"\/four-etiquette-guidelines-for-asking-spiritual-questions\/\">Mentoring Community <\/a>gathering, choose a passage that is not too long\u2014four to eight verses. Then prepare everyone for the reading:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <strong>Reading God\u2019s Word:<\/strong> Have everyone close their eyes. Say, \u201cListen for a word or phrase that you particularly notice as I read the passage aloud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the reading, have everyone sit in silence for two to three minutes. Then say, \u201cWith your eyes closed, speak the word or phrase you noticed. Don\u2019t worry about others speaking at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.<strong> Reflecting on God\u2019s Word:<\/strong> Next, say, \u201cAs I read the passage again, listen for how the content speaks to your life today.\u201d Read the passage again, slowly and clearly, followed by two to three minutes of silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the silence, invite people to share: \u201cWhat does the passage mean to you? What did you hear, or what are you feeling or thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>Responding to God\u2019s Word:<\/strong> For the third reading, say, \u201cAs I read the passage again, listen to how you might respond.\u201d Read the passage again, slowly, and have the group sit in silence for two to three minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the silence, invite people to say a small prayer of response. Sometimes someone will <a href=\"\/does-god-really-speak-to-us\/\">hear profound, life-changing words<\/a>, sometimes someone is challenged or affirmed, and sometimes nothing happens. All is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. <strong>Resting in God\u2019s Word:<\/strong> Have everyone close their eyes again and listen while the passage is read for the final time. Say, \u201cReceive the words and rest in Jesus\u2019 truth.\u201d After the fourth reading, the group might say the Lord\u2019s Prayer together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the conclusion, the group might discuss their experience. What are some questions or insights? How does <a href=\"\/learning-to-listen\/\">listening <\/a>help us to see and hear the Word differently than a Bible study does? How might the group respond to these words from Jesus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author\"><figure class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__avatar\"><img alt=\"MaryKate Morse\" class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__avatar-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.navpress.com\/sites\/thedisciplemaker\/wp-content\/uploads\/MORSE-Author-Photo-bordered.png\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__content\"><span class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__name\">MaryKate Morse<\/span><p class=\"wp-block-coblocks-author__biography\">represents a global team of leaders who, under the guidance of Leighton Ford, developed the Mentoring Communities model of group leadership development. She is a professor at Portland Seminary, a mentor and trainer for Lausanne Young Leaders, and a trainer for Leighton Ford Ministries. She is a founding board member of Missio Alliance and is affiliated with Global Evangelists Forum and Africa Enterprise. Additionally, she is a spiritual director for international evangelists and church planters.
