“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations …” – Matthew 28:19
I am sure that we are all very familiar with this verse. It is the one passage that provides pastors impetus to enforce discipleship amongst their people. Folks engaged in the daily task of discipling hold on to this verse, indicating it as their “m.o.”
The two words embedded here—go and make—are verbs, commands. You can’t rest on your laurels and “go.” You can’t “make” simply by pontificating, considering, thinking. There is definitely going to be some activity involved in going and making.
And yet . . .
It was interesting for me personally when I went back to read this verse recently. I had grown up in a Christian home, the son of a pastor, and now was working for an organization known for its discipling and discipleship methods. But I must confess, I don’t think I had paid much attention to the verse that precedes this one.
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” – Matthew 28:18
It’s powerful. This passage follows Mary Magdalene confronting an empty tomb, the disciples being subsequently informed, and then their meeting up with the risen Savior, Jesus. It is in verse 18 where he empowers them—and, frankly, us all. “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” For that reason, therefore, “go and make disciples of all nations.” Before He sends us, Jesus empowers us with His authority, an authority that binds heaven and earth.
Wow. Yowza. Ok, I think I can go now!
