Eugene H. Peterson

Eugene H. Peterson

1932-2018. Eugene H. Peterson was a pastor, scholar, writer, and poet. After founding and pastoring a church in the Baltimore area for nearly thirty years, he served as professor of spiritual theology at Regent College. In the 1990s, he began translating the Bible from the Greek and Hebrew texts into a contemporary rendering called The Message Bible. His work was reviewed by a panel of biblical language scholars to ensure its authenticity. While faithful to the original languages, his ear was always tuned to the cadence of contemporary English. It took Eugene a full ten years to complete The Message Bible, and his labor of love connects today's readers to the timeless stories of Scripture with fresh eyes. Eugene wrote more than thirty books, including As Kingfishers Catch Fire, Run with the Horses, and A Long Obedience in the Same Direction. For his work on The Message Bible, he received the prestigious ECPA Gold Medallion Book Award.Eugene retired as a college professor in 2006 and spent his final years in Montana with his beloved wife, Jan.
