As I write this, my state is enthused—nay, energized—by the performance of our very own Denver Broncos. The Mile High City is planning a ticker-tape parade, and I’m sure we will be talking about our “world champions” for days to come.
The auspicious occasion took place on a Sunday, which gave a way for plenty of fans to show their true colors at faith gatherings across the country. My pastor even began his sermon by showcasing his orange tie! I can well remember a similar game several years back, when the church I attended got into the team spirit. The worship team wore their favorite player’s jersey and covered their microphones with orange and blue foam windscreens.
Now, hear me. I’m not opposed to celebrating good times at church. I did think it interesting, however, how we had no qualms about wearing t-shirts and jerseys plastered with “18” or “58” or (insert your favorite number) and “woot woot”ing our way down the church aisle. Would we be willing to put on a similar parade in “team Jesus” colors, whatever they may be?
You see, a simple little thing like Super Bowl Sunday is a human tradition. But attending worship with fellow believers is and should be so much more.
As we settle into post-football frenzy, I would love to think the energy, enthusiasm—yes, the fanatic love—that captured us all would translate into even more committed disciples of Jesus. Would we get as excited for one person’s life being transformed as we do a feeble attempt at a touchdown?
OK, ‘nuff said. Go Team Jesus!
