Shepherds and Believers, Let’s Go!

Share this:

When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
– Luke 2:15, NLT

I read recently that close to 46 million passengers traveled on airlines during the recent holiday season. A record-breaking 112.5 million will have gone “over the river and through the woods” this past December. That is a lot of people on the go!
The shepherds in Luke 2 were on the go as well. Dazed and somewhat confused after the angelic choir departs and the bright lights subside, they know they must heed the heavenly hosts. And there is no hesitation. No “Let’s wait until sunrise” or “Let’s finish the job we have here.” They were clearly talking it up to each other. And then, that bold command—“Let’s go”—leaves no one with any doubt. It’s a clear statement of action. And it’s communal. An invitation to head someplace together. With excitement. With expectation.
A few months ago I was in the presence of a dear friend approaching the end of his life. My wife and I were with him in his hospital room, where through heavy breathing, he with eyes shut, smiled at us, grateful for our visit. It was clear to all in that room that this was a holy place, a holy moment: One of Christ’s followers was getting ready to cross over, to finish his race well.
I was not present with this godly man when he breathed his last breath, but I am told by family members that he was aware of the presence of many others welcoming him into heaven. At some point, they recount, he exclaimed to those other-worldly beings, “Let’s go”—as if he was embarking on a whole new adventure. Which, I suppose, he was. He is.
As I look out into 2019 I want to be a disciple on the go. Going where Jesus would have me walk. Going where I can make disciples. As I type this, the eve of a new year, I get excited with the prospect of a brand new year. 365 days. Christ-followers, let’s go!

  1. I love this post!!! Thanks Don! It is amazing how it fits with what I am feeling called to do more of in 2019! I want to help people “come and see”. Jesus uses these three words with His disciples on many occasions. “Let’s go help people come and see”
