Chariot Climbers

The Spirit told Philip, “Climb into the chariot.” Running up alongside, Philip heard the eunuch reading Isaiah and asked, “Do you understand what you’re reading?” He answered, “How can I without some help?” and invited Philip into the chariot with him.  (Acts 8: 29-31 MSG)

How many times have you been in a certain setting – perhaps discussing a plot line to a bestselling novel or the story line to a particular movie? Remember that moment when the one with whom you are engaged in conversation illuminates the point and the proverbial light bulb goes off? You offer up a euphoric “I get it!” Suddenly everything has come together – the characters, the scenes, and the dialog. It makes total sense. And it was just that simple clarification that made all the difference.
Discipleship is like that. It often requires being available to the Holy Spirit. Paying careful attention to that quiet little nudge and responding favorably. Being with that grieving individual and providing sparse words of comfort. Interacting with your neighbor who is stumped by Christians. Or your colleague at work who is mystified by the Bible, frightened by the genealogies.
May we take a cue from Philip and be willing to be chariot climbers. To say “yes” to the Spirit. To provide help to those who seek it. Take note: it won’t be without its demands on your time. But what a gift to help someone understand what following Jesus is all about.
