Learning the Route by Heart

Learning the Route by Heart

When we travel often to the same destination, there comes a time when we no longer need a map [or directions via GPS]. That’s because we’ve memorized the route by heart. It is similar in our spiritual journeys. When we have God’s Word stored in our hearts, it serves as a map to get us through life’s challenges and safely to our destination. There are many benefits to memorizing the Scriptures.

Psalm 119:11 says that Scripture keeps us from sin, which is helpful if we want to be like Jesus: “I have hidden your work in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:105 says that Scripture gives us guidance and direction for our lives: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

Scripture Memorization

Use the tear-out bookmarks provided in the back of the book to help you memorize each week’s primary verse. Keep the verse with you as you go through your day so you can review it often. Look at it again before you sleep. As you continually keep God’s Word in front of you, He will begin to infuse your heart with His wisdom. Plan to review the verse, first saying the topic listed on the bookmark, then the reference, then the verse, and repeat the reference at the end. For example, reviewing your verse for this week would look like this: “Relationship with Jesus, 2 Corinthians 5:17. ‘When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!’ 2 Corinthians 5:17.”

There will be one verse provided for each session. At the end of this book, you will have all the verses in your heart, where the Holy Spirit can use them to guide you in every situation on your journey.

Topic: Relationship with Jesus

When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!

(2 Corinthians 5:17, NLT)

You’ve been reading an excerpt* from Bridges on the Journey, the first book in A WOMAN’S JOURNEY OF DISCIPLESHIP series. The series was written by five women who have experienced first-hand the joy of discipleship. More than a Bible study, Bridges on the Journey, and companion books Crossroads on the Journey and Friends on the Journey, is a process through which women learn to walk daily with the Lord and pass on to others the same discipling vision Jesus gave His disciples.
